The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

The things that I could figure out about this question is that the resistance of a NiCd cell is smaller than of a NiMH cell. Thus it can ensure higher current. However the current of newer NiMH cells that have high charge capacities is already enough to reach the maximal current the flash can take up. So there might be no reason to use NiCd, as you cannot get a shorter recycle time than with NiMH.

Simply speaking the minimum of the recycling time may be effected by the flash, not the battery.

So practically it should be figured out if the current of NiMH cells are as high as the maximum the 300TL can take up. If it's not that high, there is some reason to choose NiCd instead of higher charge capacity NiMH. I guess this could become clear making a comparison of recycling times with NiCd and NiMH in combination with the 300TL. Or at least we would know which is the faster ;-))

Can you tell me an exact recycle time with NiMH? (Until the pilot lamp starts to light - let's say with a 300TL that was not in use for at least a few hours before.)

Philip: tha T90 manual tells explicitly (page 61) not to push in the stop down lever with the lens set to "A". If you do it, the camera will display the error. It's by design.

bronstejn: NiCd may have a higher "discharge rate" than NiMH, and can reload a flash faster. In turn NiMH usually have higher capacity and are less affected by the "memory" problem.

I use NiMH, if you need very fast recycle times you can try NiCd, but if it is really important I'd go for something alike Quantum Batteries.

I've got a T90 which is displaying what is apparently a well-known error code - EEEEE - in the viewfinder.
It only appears when I've selected Aperture or Shutter priority, and depressed the depth-of-field preview button. But when I go to manual, or remove the DoF preview, everything returns to normal.

Am I being really dense? Is there any reason why the T90 can't handle Aperture Priority & DoF, or is this a genuine fault?

Ta muchly.

Oh, yeah, actually I didn't intend to use alkalines. I was interested in whether the NiCd has shorter recycle time than the NiMH, or vice versa. My question was misunderstandable, I admit.
Which batteries you use out there, and what's your personal experience? According to the manuals, 300TL needs 6 s with fully charged NiCd before the pilot lamp lights up, plus 30 s more to reach the maximal guide No. But practically maybe it's more important what does NiMH do in -20 C... (that's something we have now here in Europe!) :-×

bronstejn: NiCd and NiMH have faster recycle times. While once NiCd had a smaller capacity than alkaline, newer NiMH have a very good capacity. NiCd works better than alkaline in cold situations, I think NiMH too, but I am not sure. In the long run they are also cheaper then alkaline, especially if you use the flash a lot.

Hello guys and gals, I am back after 3 years, as I've purchased a 300TL.
What's your experience about batteries used with the flash? Does NiCd or NiMH have a shorter recycle time?
Also what about temperature, in general - which is better for low temperature?

SkateboardPhoto: there are some T90s modified with a PC sync, but it was a mod, unmodified T90s have not it. You can have more than one flash with its own multiflash accessiries, or with old plain and simple multi PC sync accessories, depending on what flash you are using.

I was needing to hook a flash up to my T90 the other day, and since the shoe mount was occupied, I thought that there would be a PC flash sync terminal somewhere on the T90 body, but I came to the conclusion that there was not one. Is it possible to have two flashes attaced to the T90? Am i wrong? and if so, where is the little bugger??
