The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. Don, You are, indeed getting a flash. In A-TTL you will, upon pressing the shutter release button part way, get a white 1/20th power pre flash when using bounce flash or an infra red flash when using direct flash. In FEL the pre flash will be the 1/20th power white flash. I strongly urge you to try to obtain Canon's excellent booklet, " Canon's Reference Guide for The 300TL Speedlight". You might try http://www.canonfd.com

Hi y'all, Just bought a 300tl off of ebay and it arrived yesterday. It seems to be ok in all respects but (there's that BUT) after it charges I press the t90 shutter release 1/2 way down to read the numbers and I hear a snap (electrical discharge) in the 300tl. At the same instant as the discharge, the lights on the 300tl blink one time and then all is normal. I push the shutter release all the way down and the 300tl flashes and the picture is taken (I hope as I have to take the roll in today).

The question is: Is this normal for the 300tl? Being in the electronic industry for many years has tuned my ears for this kind of noise, arc, sparking and I am concerned that I may have bought a unit that is about to fail. The sparking sound is not very loud but it is noticable. Please, if anyone has the time to try this and listen for a snap when the shutter release button is pressed half way down, I would appreciate some help. I think I can still return the unit for a refund. Thanks and regards from Texas, Don

Lee - Not sure about an FT QL manual, but you could probably use an FTb manual, the main difference being the lack of full aperture metering. The FT is a very straightforward camera, I shot with one for many years. The only thing you have to get used to, depending on prior experience, is stopdown metering, which the FT requires. The lever on the right side of the camera, under your R middle finger, is the stop down lever and also actuates the light meter. With that pressed in, and a shutter speed selected, (a few factors to consider here) you turn the lens aperture ring until the needle in the viewfinder is centered on the stationary circle. (Been a few years, I think it's a circle!) That is the correct shutter/aperture combination for a good exposure based on what is *centered* in the viewfinder. There is a 12% rectangle, which should be visible on the focusing screen, which is where the metering takes place. Experience will show how to place that rectangle in a given situation to get proper exposure, but basically you are looking to meter 18% grey, which can often be approximated by metering off green grass, or something of a similar value. Hope that helps.

The A-series flashes will work just fine on the T-90. For example, the 199A, when mounted on the T-90 will set the shutter speed to 1/90th (in 199A "auto" mode), and preset the aperature according to the value as determined by the dialswitch on the back of the 199A and the colour coded selector switch (the yellow, green, red, Manual mode selector). On the 199A, if set to "Manu.1/60-30s" the T-90 will set the shutter speed to whatever is dialed in on the camera. When that switch is set to Auto, the default shutter speed is 1/90th. The T-90 will also display and "accept" the flash with the little green flash ready arrow in the viewfinder and respond accordingly when a charged up flash is mounted and available to it. One could say the T-90 is fully backward compatable to the earlier A-series flash units and their respective function/controls. Of course, you don't have use of TTL feature of the T-90, and the flash exposure is determined by the flash's sensor - NOT by the T-90. (Think A-1 era functioning pre-TTL operation.)

As a side note, the 199A will essentially do the same for the earlier A-series cameras such as the AE-1 and AE-1p, as these were the systems available at that time - circa late 1970's-80's (was it THAT long ago?)

Daniel
The 300TL will not work as an automatic or dedicated flash on the A series cameras. It is designed to receive it's automatic information only from the off the TTL equiped T90. I don't believe it will even work with the autofocus EOS cameras, even though it has the same five pin connection as the EOS compatible flashes. The only way the 300TL will work with an A series is to set it to fully manual, full flash or 1/16. There are many flashes that will work with the A series cameras, but they all have the three pin connections. None of the A series cameras had TTL flash automation. They only have dedication, which means the flash will set the camera to the proper flash synch speed, and it will set the camera's aperture to the one selected on the flash unit. The flash automation is still through the flash's external sensor window. Probably the most advanced Canon flash that is compatible would be the 299. There are lots of pretty fancy flashes from independent manufacturers that are fully compatible too. Hope this helps.

Can the 300TL be used on the AE-1 Program? If so, why does the AE-1 flash "32" in it's viewfinder when I mount the 300TL? Is there any integration between the two at all, or does the AE-1 simply regard the 300TL as a non-dedicated flash? Can the 300TL be relied upon to deliver and accurate flah burst in relation to the AE-1P's automation? If anyone knows, or has experience with this, please email me at griswell@bellsouth.net Thanks!

Z, Professional Technical Services in Washington, DC can do FD lenses. I have had them work on two lenses for me, with very good results.

Gabriel, you probably would be better off with a macro lens and macro flash. The 100 mm macro lenes is very good and gives you some working room. The ML-2 macrolight for the T-90 is hard to find, but the good news is the ML-3 for the EOS works fine with the T90. Pick up some books on macro photography and start practicing.
