The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Hi everybody; After all these years I finally went out and bought a T90 today. It joins my trusty old T70 and replaced the now hardly ever used AE1-P. All this excitement and a web search brings me straight here - deep joy! I promise to read the archives before asking stupid questions. Thanks for a great resource. Cheers - Ed -

Syd, Welcome to the club and gird up thy loins. Any time I buy a 15 year old machine there is cause for question about its longevity, naturally. Some deal with it by buying another body of the same kind or another FD body as a backup.(See goal is not to keep a T90 lasting but to take pictures I believe passionatley) One fellow here has six T90's in his stable. More than me. I have one and an older FD model in case. Having followed this forum for a while and talked to Canon Service, I have never heard of an LCD ever needing replacement from old age. Now that beats the Hubble Telescope, what? If you bought a spare LCD, Murphy's Law( actually Irwin's Law) sez your first problem will be with shutter replacement. Or maybe the battery pack handle will crack. See what I mean?. As far as turning on and off cycles. I have to laugh excuse me please. My answer, if you are serious,, is to turn it on when you decide to make a picture and leave it off when you are not. If anyone has a more enlightened response, let's hear from them. If you have to worry or even fret a little about camera breaking down in two yers, where is the fun of making pictures. Better one should buy a Leica M6. They almost never break down. Well, almost never or so I heard. Thoughts offered in good spirit by one worrier to maybe another. Cheers, and keep shooting until the last trumpet sounds on the Judgment Day,Sincerely, Erasmus (boy this typeface is small, are my eyes going out on me...?)

I would be most interested in puchasing a T90 with Command Back and 300TL and the off shoe cable adaptors. Where do I start to look?

I have just bought a T90 and have a lot to learn, as the following questions probably show.

1. I appreciate that a separate battery provides the power for the liquid crystal display panel during replacement of the main batteries. However, does that mean that the main batteries provide the power for the liquid crystal display panel during normal operation?

2. In the Canon Instruction Manual, it is stated that the LCD ‘may become hard to read’ after about five years. When the cameras were first introduced, this statement may well have been purely speculative on Canon’s part because they probably felt that their customers would expect some guide, and any guide is better than none. With the passage of time, does anyone have any idea how long they last in practice, and should I try to buy one now, against the day when it will be needed?

3. Since the life of the LCD may well depend on how long it is switched on, and this has to be balanced against wear and tear on the L – A switch, does anybody have any recommendation regarding the frequency with which the T90 should be turned on and off?

Recently visited a friend with a view to buying his T90. External condition excellent. Played around with the controls and everything looked good until I pressed the self timer button - it stayed in. All controls locked up. Tried to free it with no success. I felt bad. My friend said the camera had been fine since he had it serviced following it being dropped into the sea! Has anyone heard of this problem with the self timer button? Even if this was fixed, does immersion in salt water spell the death of a T90?
Cheers

Beth W, There are two angle finders for the T90. The A2 provides an inverted image. The B gives a right way up image. Both have dioptre corrections between +2 to -4. Both may be revolved for vertical shots.

I am so glad to see these pages. Had 2 Canon AE-1s and stepped up to the T-90. Now at least I know there are others out there like me who still use the T-90. I have a 300 TL on the way and hope my T-90 lasts for another 10 or 20 years. Take care.

Does a right-angle finder exist for the T90?

During longer period that my camera was not in use, it also had shutter curtain sticking problem (flashing shutter arrow and no shutter operation). I sent my T90 to Authorized Canon Tech. Service of Turkey in Istanbul. Mr.Ata Çetinkaya who is in charge of tech. dept. said that the shutter release magnet needs cleaning and had it repaired. Since I had sent my T90 to the same address before for shutter and back up battery replacement, this time they didn't charge me anything. And I really appreciated it.

Camera shop in Melbourne has a rather well used 300 TL for $180 Aust (cheap price). Shop appears to have gained some ex-pro gear FD L type lens etc. It appears to have an intermitant fault in one of the switches. fires occassionally then switches off. Could do with another 300TL. Is it worth a punt ?
