The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

I have a sizeable collection of Canon FD lenses, including 2 T90 bodies, which
were CLA'ed ( by Steve in Las Vegas) before I stored them away (after going
digital). The cameras are in
very good working order, with few scratches, and no mold or light leaks. The
lenses have clear clean glass, no scratches and have front and backs covers.
I would like to sell this as a package, but would accept offers for individual
items.
Here is what I have, make me an offer:

Larry,

The best source of information about the T90 is your owners' manual. There are some books available that are good including one by Hove - Fountain Books. The Canon T90 Performance Book by Canon is pretty but not of much use.

This site is loaded with useful information on every aspect of the T90 if you will take the time to browse through it.

The T90 takes FD mount lenses. Canon makes superb lenses and other manufacturers also make excellent lenses. If you buy a used lens try to get some kind of guarantee IN WRITING or, at the very least, test the lens on your camera and inspect it carefully.

Depending upon the age and useage of your camera a cleaning and lubrication by an experienced Canon technician might be advisable.
But if it is working as it should perhaps it is not necessary. I used mine for twenty years and only had it serviced once. I bought it in 1985 and it still looks and works like new.

If you have questions or problems you will assuredly find the answers by browsing this site. If you can't find what you need then post your question here.

You have a great camera.

Mickey

I just glanced thru my t-90 manual for the umpteenth time & noticed for the first time that the t-90's metering system will not work with my absolute favorite lens, the very impressive looking & optically excellent 19mm fl-r lens.(ha-ha) I've used this lens repeatedly with no issues that I can remember. The manual states "mechanical reasons" but it seems to work just fine. Does anyone have a clue what there talking about.

@jim:
No your lenses for the Canon T90 will not fit any Canon DSLR-model such as 20d (which is quite outdated anyway). Canon changed the bayonet completely back in 1987 and the old FD-lenses won't fit the new EF mount of the EOS cameras. There are, however, lens adapters on teh market and I would strongly advise NOT to use them as you lose infinity focus, you have of course to focus manually and you can only use stopped-down metering.

Jim,

The Canon T90 uses an FD mount.
The EOS Uses an EOS mount.

You can use the FD lenses on an EOS camera with a suitable adapter.
However, you will probably lose some or all of the automation and have to make your settings manually.

But it does open up a vast array of excellent and now relatively cheap FD lenses.

CJ,

Where in this wide, wide world do you reside?

Shipping your camera 12,000 miles for repairs may prove to be impractically expensive.

I purchased my Cannon T90 in 1987 and have taken some excellent shots with it. My camera body started to act strange several years ago. I believe the problem is within the shutter mechanism because my camera will work just fine at times and at other times it will just freeze on me and not work. The model is too old for Cannon to spend the time repairing it. Is there some place where I can have my camera repaired for less than $200.00?

Megan,

There might be something wrong with the camera but before assigning blame you might explore some of these.

1. Is your film leader in good condition? One torn sprocket hole could create problems as could kinked film leader.

2. Pull a few inches of film out of the cassette to make sure it is running freely. Again check the sprocket holes.

3. Try pushing the film a little beyond the orange mark underneath that solid black bar.

4. If you have a picture of the open back of the camera make sure all components are present. If you do not have a photo I can send you one.

5. Just for kicks get a fresh roll of the cheapest film you can buy and try it in the camera. Sometimes old film can acquire a tight curl that prevents it from loading properly.
