The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

I have a T90 for several years, working fine. I get the EEE and Help notice every now and then. I can reset this by pushing the Battery Indicator button (in the 'door' at the right) once. Sorry if this message has been posted before. Hope it helps someone.

Dear Gerred, Love blooms again. Nice if one could stash the little lady/spouse in the comfy storage bin and then revive with four Duracells, huh, don't answer, I kid today. Your story counters the accepted wisdom that T90 shutters must be exercised or EEE and poopsville,so who knows...As always, Irwin S. TomR, the Speedlite Reference Guide speaks only of using the modular cords/300TL's in TTL Auto mode. Aperture and shutter speed are set manually. The film plane sensor in the T90 quenches the flashes when proper exposure is achieved. I'm not sure what would happen when everything is set to Program mode. My guess is that, without a preflash to estimate flash exposure (made unavailable by the cords), the camera is giving you an ambient exposure reading, ignoring the flashes. I don't know what then happens with flash exposure. It may expose correctly via TTL Auto, or it may miss the mark entirely. At any rate, you're saddled with a long exposure time as a result of the low ambient light level. At any rate, TTL Auto works well with the cord system. Unfortunately, there's no electronic way to control lighting ratios. Good luck!

TomR – I usually use my modular cord with T90 and 300TL both on manual, so I can’t comment on your application. I use the modular cord to power two softboxes at a 45o angle on each side to copy a book without getting glare. Most often I use the modular cord outdoors to photograph hummingbirds. I’ve converted over from two Canon 300TLs to two 550EXs because the 550EX will go manual power from full power to 1/128 power in one stop intervals. I run the main strobe at 1/64 power and the fill strobe at 1/128 power to get the flash duration down to 40/1,000,000 second. This completely stops the wing motion. The strobes are 9” from the bird, while the camera and 300mm lens is 5’ from the bird.

Don, The problem I was trying to describe withthe Modular Cord System arose when I had the 300TL's and the T-90 set to Program mode using three Speedlights. My complete description of what I encountered was posted on 22 October 2002, and is copied below:

"Date : 04:56 AM Tuesday 22 October, 2002 Multiple 300TL flash work. I've recently acquired the connecting cords and TTL distributor to run three 300TLs. I understand that the hot shoe adapter takes certain functions out on the flash units; like FEL, A-TTL & 2nd curtain sync, but I'm getting what I think are strange settings in full program mode with the three flashes. Shooting at EV 2.5 with 200ASA negative film, the program mode is giving me settings like SS 10 seconds @ f/8. These seem more like readings I would get using the A-TTL mode of the 300TL. Camera is set to Program; Flashes are also in Program mode; the batteries are good; and the flashes are at full charge and the T-90 acknowledges flash ready when activating the T-90s meter. Do I have a problem or is shotting multiple flash indoor w/o floods not an option? If you think that I'm missing something (including the seemingly obvious), let me know, I won't take offense. Thanks, TomR." If you have any comments or suggestions based on what I described, I'd like to read them Thanks, TomR.

TomR - The second cord system you mentioned is called the Canon Modular cord system. It is designed to revert to TTL if you set ATTL on the flash (no pre-flash). This is to prevent wrong readings since the strobe can be placed 10' or more to the side (very much off axis). If you set the 300TL to manual low or manual high, it will work just fine with either cord. The short cord (Off-camera shoe cord 2) will work fine in ATTL). I have both cords and use both on my T90 and on my EOS3.

Dan, You can use Canon's Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2 (about two feet) and maintain all the T-90/300TL's automatic exposure modes. I think I paid $60-70 at B&H a year ago. Canon's TTL Hot Shoe Adapter; Connecting Cords (up to ten feet); and Off Camera Shoe Adapter (with or without the TTL Distributor) will also allow off camera operation of the 300TL, albeit with some limitations. I found that using this combination seemed to put the 300TL into A-TTL mode regardless of the setting selected on the flash unit. Good luck. Let us know what you decide to do & how it works out. TomR.
