The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Thank you Alan, very useful informations! I'm about to buy a second 300TL and TTL cables, I use umbrellas and reflectors already, and I am very interested in using them for portraits with TTL metering, non-professional models usually are not patient enough to allow for careful metering. I'm also plannint to use them for macro and see if they can substitute a ring flash. I will experiment a little, and if I find something interesting I'll share it here.

Jomar, Luigi: the TTL Auto mode is indeed described in the 300TL Reference Guide. Set the 300TL to A-TTL or FEL modes, set the aperture on the lens, and set a suitable shutter speed on the camera. There is no indication of correct exposure, as far as I know.

I have posted a summary of the 300TL's functions here:

The help message is shown most often when there's a problem with the lens. Does the message still appear with the lens removed or with a different lens? You will have to press the bc (battery check) button to remove the help.

Cheers,

Nick -

This is by no meaqns a definitive diagnosis, but to my understanding the most common cause of the symptom you're describing is a failing shutter magnet. Not in itself a huge repair, if the part can be found, but in my experience a lot of shops won't touch the camera unless it's a full CLA (Clean, Lube and Adjust) - which makes sense when you think about it. The man I use, in Reno, Nevada, charges $90 for a T-90 CLA. You should try and find a service center near you for a more positive diagnosis.

Thanks Luigi!
I have loadet the pictures down, make a nice booklet and read it carefully. Seems to be far more extensive then the manual

Jomar: I read the 300TL instructions carefully after Alan answer and I did not find any hint about it too. Then I made some research and found a "reference guide", written by the Canon USA Technical Department (see here http://www.canonfd.com/300ref/300ref.htm) that actually states "The 300TL as a simple TTL flash: set the T90 to shutter priority and select the desired shutter speed. At this point, instead of leaving the lens on A, manually select an aperture of your choice". Why Canon never added that feature to the 300TL "official" manual is a mistery to me, because in some situations is exactly what someone needs.
Still I don't know if the flash or camera gives any feedback of correct exposure.

Alan
According to the 300TL-manual all automatic modes shal be used with the aperture ring on the lens set to "A". There is no description about using the lens manual.
Can you please tell which setting you use on the 300TL while using the lens off "A". I did belive the two manual modes ((MHi/MLo) were the only options with the lens off "A"

Luigi, "How can I select an aperture and let the camera cut off light when enough? Simply taking of the aperture ring form A or there is another way?" Yes, set the aperture manually on the lens. Set a shutter speed of 1/250 or longer on the camera. The camera and flash will give you automatic flash exposure. You can also control the amount of natural light exposure by your choice of aperture and shutter speeds, of course.
