The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. Thanks Tim for the tip. Can you please maybe list the phone number of this fixer shop in Asheville, North Carolina? I have nothing against southern fried repair shops (I joke, I joke already).Still, I remember on my honeymoon a few years ago that was. I was driving back then a won't name the marque, a British sportscar (excuse me,my UK friends, but it was a piece of what we call dreck or junk then and now cause the brits never learned to make autos IMO). So me and the new bride are trying to get up a hill on the way to Tennessee and boom the muffler cracks in the back an no more compression on that high compression dual carb sports car engine.. Wife very cranky.marriage off to shaky start. I go to the authorized, hah, sportscar dealer rep in your Asheville,N.C. and he says "Weellll, suh, we don't stock that muffler. I think you'll have to go down to the regional distributor in Atlanta." No kidding Atlanta, a few miles that is!. Well, good old Midas found something in the bin they braised on, It was noisy all the way, not a throaty roar, but it got Irwin and the wife moving. So ever since I have well wondered about this Asheville, N.C. Call it Yankee prejudice, but I'll bet an Englishman may cock the eyebrow at sending something over to --maybe Ireland (I dunno). It's regional pride OK. But seriously, I think good technicians are moving south because who can afford the rents in New Jersey and San Francisco. Thank you list maintainers for putting up with my fixer saga. Best of luck and a great Memorial Day weekend for all my countrymen. And cheers to the folks in the Dominion. Irwin, add Crystal Camera Repair in Asheville, NC to your list of wonderful people to work on the tank. Shutter repaired, internal battery replaced, CLA, new battery magazine, and return shipping for a paltry $125.00....New battery magazine was $22. For those who need one, they have more......Rock on!@

Katrina, the brochure I got a few years ago from the US distributor of Metz says that the Metz flash system(its a daptable to different cameras) you speak of couples to the T90 if it has the proper coupling module on the bottom. I think the module is called adapter 311 from this chart with small print for my eyes. Check for that number on the module. Looks like adapter 310 also works with the T90. Think of it as having a docking port like when ourr space shuttles link up with the international space station. Lousy comparison- Forget that one please..... What I mean is that to find out what camera functions you get with the Metz and the module and how they compare with the features you get with Speedlite 300TL and the T90, I think you are stuck with making a call to the Metz distributor In Canada and getting the features chart they publish. Sounds to me, but no guarantees, you get almost everything you need, but not everything the purpose- built 300TL offers. Meaning, I do believer TTL control but not A-TTL. That is not a troubling loss.
Say, you inherited one fine platter of goods and we commend you on learning how to use same and keep them fit. Nice that Don is here to take away some of the mysteries of battery technology. Cheers, and happy shooting mein kind, Uncle Irwin, House of Irwin .

Katrina - Film & battery & storage of T90 - There are probably as many different opinions as the number of photographers. Here is my thinking: Film is obviously chemically unstable or it wouldn't respond to light. Film is known to be more unstable after it is exposed. So if the image is important, it should be be developed as soon as is practical. I very rarely leave a partially exposed roll in the camera. If you have film in the T90, you must leave the AA batteries in, or else you will be draining the the internal T90 memory battery which will power the film roll icon on the LCD. After you take the film out, immediately get the AA batteries out. Perhaps only one AA battery in 1,000 will leak, but one is all it takes to corrode the battery contacts on the T90 battery tray. This approach MIGHT be one reason why I have gotten 22 years combined life on two T90 internal batteries.

Hello, I am Katrina from Blackstock, Ontario. I was fortunate enough to receive my Dad's camera collection approx. 5 years ago. He gave me an A-1, F1 and his prized T-90. Along with the camera's he also gave me 12 lenses ranging from a fish eye to an amazing 400 lens. Everything is in mint condition, one would never know it had even been used. My question is I find that I like to use my system sca-300 meca blitz flash as oppossed to the 300 speedlight that goes with the camera. I find I get more versatility with the settings on the meca blitz. Perhaps I am not using the speedlight properly? There are 5 points on the shoe of the meca blitz, so I assumed it was compatible with the t/90. Could someone confirm this for me?
I am still very much an amateur but an avid user and learner. Since the equipment came with so many flashes, lights, umbrellas, tripods and gadgets it gets confusing. Of all the tripods he gave me, the bembo?, is the best one I think. It just takes time to figure it out initially. Basically I wanted to confirm that Im okay with using the meca blitz flash. Also after reading the messages I am wondering if I should also take out the batteries and film when I store the camera. I probably use the camera maybe 3 to 5 times a week? but the odd time it will sit for a couple weeks. .

Thanks,

kat.

First, thanks Don for confirming my view that Canon put their best technology into the T90 display. Probably bought it from Sharp the wonders of LCD technology although I read that it was originally a USA invention. Funny, huh? Now as to the flash PC to hot shoe adapter business. If you use a Canon Speedlite, you don't have a worry, because the Canon Speedlite will not fry, spindle, or otherwise mutilate the trigger circuits of a T90. The circuits are designed for a 6 Volt DC trigger voltage says Canon.(they are probably being a little conservative Don) Which means if you connect a Vivitar 283 you picked up in a garage sale, yes you could either cause a circuit failure or pitting of contacts. Old Vivitars sometimes exceeded 200 Volts... You have several choices: 1) Stick to Canon Speedlites and Canon Shoe Adapters. Good products anyway, not to slam Metz or Sunpak but Canon makes great flash goods. A side benefit is that they keep some of the communication-called dedication(the five contact points you see)- so important to this camera and its ATTL flash system. 2) If you want to use another brand flash, you must check its trigger voltage (do a search on how to do this with a voltmeter) and be sure you dont much exceed that voltage. Flash at your own risk. 3) Buy a combination hot shoe to PC fitting that has a built in voltage regulator. One is made by Wein comapny called SafeSynch. Also I have seen some PC cords made by the Paramount company of NJ, very robust beauties too, that have spliced in a voltage regulator right in the cord!. This is a subject that deserves more attention and Canon's manual doesn't say much that is helpful I knw. I trust I have added some enlightenment to the board even if I repeat old stuff.. As ever, Erasmus B.Black your genial correspondent from her grace the african queen.

PC flash photography-

can I use a hotshoe adapter for a PC cord- I think I read somewhere that this bypasses a electronic safety mechanism and fries the camera- although I called the local pro repair shop and he said he had never seen it. will a simple hotshoe adapter work, or do I have to get the expensive electronic remote one?

Syd - LCD life: I am a physicist/engineer that has had responsibilty for life test/stressing LCDs for a major Fortune 500 company. An LCD is made up of two glass plates, a very critical alignment layer on the two inside surfaces of the glass, and the liquid crystal fluid inside (about 6 microns thick). The lifetime of an LCD is totally determined by the quality and technology of the materials inside; especially the alignment layer, which holds the rod-shaped LC materials in position. If the alignment layer was made of PVA (poly-vinyl alcohol, the lifetime could be limited; if it was poly-aimid (sp?), it would be quite long. Also, the seal material is critical. You could switch your liquid crystal on and off 10,000 times per day, and it wouldn't have the slightest effect on the LCD lifetime. I have never heard of anyone having trouble with a T90 LCD. On internal battery: I have owned 2 T90s for 11 years, and both internal batteries are still working like new. I always store my T90 without film and without AA batteries inside.

Syd, I would agree with Erasmus - I don't think this list has ever mentioned any problem with the LCD. The backup battery is perhaps more likely, but it seems that if you always have the AAs in there is no drain on the backup. And as I once mentioned on this list, the battery/power saving of the T90 circuits appears very sophisticated (3 motors maybe?) - mine was bought in Japan in Sept.1999 and after prob. 60 rolls at least its still showing 2 bars on the original batteries! The "exercise option" has been mentioned earlier on this list - even when no film in it, just give the shutter a run and listen to the wonderful sound! Enjoy, as they say in certain restaurants.
