The Canon T-90 System |

Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Amy,
Don't have a lot ot of info WRT auto-focus cameras. My comment was more food for thought. But .... a T-90 in top condition will run close to 600 if not more, depending upon where you buy. An Eos-3 (nice piece of work, IMHO) brand new, should be below 850. Brand new, factory warranty, manufacturer support.
That said, I brought another T-90 this past weekend. (Just had to have it).
It would be an unusual piece of equipment that would not allow manual override of the auto functions. But as I said I don't have the all the answers to what constitutes a good auto focus system.
Stay with us, we need new people with an interest in this thing of ous.
Norbert,
Take the camera back. NOW. Fresh batteries should give a three bar reading on the battery check icon. Also, unless I don't understand, the noise problem you're describing is not normal.
If you have a warranty, I assume (we both know what that leads to) that you paid top dollar. Get what you paid for ... a fully functioning camera.
If the shop shows you that you've made a mistake somewhere, so be it (hang head sheeplishly) but get the camera you wanted, and paid for.
TomR.
If I don't get back for beforehand ... A good Thanksgiving to all & thanks LF ... ya done good.2. From : Barry G (Glassfund@aol.com)

After years of problem free use it may be time for a good cleaning and overhaul of my T-90. Can anyone recommend a reliable, first rate service here in the States? Any idea what a general cleaning and check would cost. Thanks for your help. Dick Schenck4. From : Norbert Meijering (nfmeije@dds.nl)

Tom,
Thanks for your reply. The noise I mentioned is always there when the camera is on. When its off it's there too however after a while it seems to be less and less however I am not sure if it's there all the time. Please let me know how your T-90 behaves.
Regarding the batteries, I noticed this problem and then decided to change to fresh batteries. After this the problem was still there, low battery power when pushing the battery check button and the problems with winding.
I will put some more film through it and some other new batteries. When there is no change I will go back to the shop next friday and take them up on their warranty policy.
Thanks,
Norbert

I'm thinking of trying some off camera flash work, two flashes etc and using the off camera flash equipment. Does the EOS version of the TTL Hot shoe adapter, TTL distributor and off-camera shoe adapter work with the T90 and 300TL flash guns.6. From : Amy Beatty (beatty@www.com)

Tom,
You referred to looking at new auto-focus systems for price comparison in your message--are there some good systems out there which also have a lot of manual focus and control features? I don't want to give up the kinds of options I have with the older, all-manual cameras. I like being able to decide on settings myself for creative effect.7. From : TomR (trigilano@singerfru.com)

Amy,
Like Irwin, since I got my T-90, I pretty much use my A-1 for backup, or for a different speed film if I think I'm going to need a quick change of films. IMHO the biggest advantage of the T-90 is the multiple metering patterns, central weighted, partial, and spot. Second biggest advantage is when used with the 300TL flash - versatility defined.
I don't often use the T-90's integral motor drive for sequential shooting, but its nice to have; and if you are planning such shooting, be aware that the A-1 with its optional motor drive (12 AA batteries) is a heavy bit of business.
Exposure compensation on the T-90 is also much easier than with the A-1, as is multiple exposure.
The only things that occur to me that the T-90 won't do are: auto bracketing exposures, and, of course, auto focus.
All in all, between the two, I would recommend the T-90 with one caveat: $$$$$
An A-1 in reasonably good condition will run about $175 to $250 U.S., while you expect to go for about $400 to $600 for a T-90, with most of the price spread dependent on the type of seller (private, auction, dealer). And then you gotta start buying lenses, releases, bells whistles, etc. While most accessories are comparable in cost (they use the same lenses) plan on $150 to $250 for a 300TL compared to $75 to $125 for a 199 Speedlight. Also there were a lot of non OEM flash units for the A-1 (I have a Kalimar) which were (and still should be less money) while I'm not aware of another flash that's a full substitute for the 300TL.
Now the sacrilege. Make a realistic assessment of what equipment you think you'll want to have over the next two or so years. Add up the $$$ to be spent and then look at what's available in that price range (with a little extra) for a new auto-focus system.
I think most T-90 owners either have had their cameras for well beyond a decade, or purchased one because they already had so much FD equipment in their closets.
Ask more (we love to read our own messages) and let us know what you decide.
Norbert,
1. Normal unless both of our cameras are suffering from the same malady.
2. Do you mean that the noise occurs when you switch the camera on, and again when you switch it off; or that the noise occurs whether the camera is on or off? If the latter that is not normal. If the former, I've never noticed it on mine but I'll listen & look over the weekend.
3 through 5. Change the batteries. The display you describe in 3 is normal for low batteries. The problems you describe winding and in the display at items 4 and 5, are also normal when batteries are low. (Or at least that's what happened to me - see this board mid to late Sept.).
You're still under warranty, so if the battery change doesn't work: go back, go directly back, do not pass go, do not collect any $$$. Repair or replace? Your call, you know the shop, I don't.
WRT the type of batteries, I use the local supermarket brand alkalines and carry spares when I go out. At 12 to 15 cents a piece ya can't beat um.
Let us know how it turns out.
TomR.

Hello,
I have just got myself a fairly nice used (offcourse) T90 and shot some film through it. Some things about it make me wonder if there is something wrong with the camera:
1. If I turn the camera off, the display stays ‘on’. Information is then reduced to the framecounter and the ‘filmroll’ on the bottum of the screen. (This only happens when film is loaded).
2. When on and also when turned off, the camera makes little ‘rewinding’ noises. The upper pin in the filmchamber is the course of this. When the cameraback is open you can see it ‘rewinding’. Kind off like it is pulling the film back to keep it flat. Seems very weird to me (is this normal).
3. When checking batteries (fresh, never used) it only gives one bar mark. Batteries used are Duracell Ultra, do I need to use any special batteries or NiCad’s, the 1800 mAh kind?
4. When shooting at high speed, the camera sounds like having problems winding, after the first exposure it’s o.k.. Note, this is only when there is film in the camera, empty it sounds very healthy. Note 2, This doesn’t happen always.
5. Also when shooting high speed (with fresh batteries) the Automatic Film Winding Speed Changeover Function steps in (blinking triangle symbol). Sometimes the triangle also blinks when shooting in single mode. Also something to do with batteries?
Off course I would like to know if some of the above points are normal, if it’s is using (leaking) a lot of power, if the motordrive could be broken/defect and if something is not normal for a t90, then what wrong with it. Also other possibly causes you know off.
The shop I bought it from has a 3 month return policy. Within the 3 months there also the possibility the send it in for repairs to an authourized repairman. This repairman has repaired my A-1 and AE-1 with good results. Yet before I go back I'd like some back-up information.
I hope you can help me and answer some, hopefully all, off my questions.
Thanks,
Norbert Meijering

Amy, you came to the right place. I got both. Either one will do the trick, especially since you have limited needs in your work. But technological-wise, by my thinking, you should go for something really nice if you are going to leave Mr Pentax and start getting friendly with Mr Canon you know. Mr Canon or Canonsan has decreed both the A-1 and the T90 to be out of date cameras or like children he won't accept as his offspring,, but like the guy with the ski mask in the horror movies, to scramble a metaphor to pieces, both cameras refuse to die. I like both cameras and whichever comes your way at an affordable price, I would say go for it. The A-1s that you find used almost always need some maintenance by now. Have someone smart check out the shutters of each. The T90s that you find used are sometimes in better shape. I only use the A-1 as a backup and would never give up my T90. Not on your life. The features you can read about on the bottom of this site. Like I am sure you can see the business on the metering patterns, the motor drive built in, and the through the lens flash metering (a sweet feature alone.) Worth the extra price Amy. Go for it. Stay well, and shop early this year, Irwin Schmedrick, House of Irwin, purveyors of kosher delicacies and dog treats. ,,,also the guy with the foam, you are funny. And the Nikon lover, each to his own says the guy what kissed the cow!10.
