The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Just got a T90, and got it very reasonable because while it was in fine condition it would not fire. A word of thanks to all on this board who's collective wisdom told me it was a minor problem, and to whoever suggested the whacking it on the carpet trick a specific thanks! Put fresh batteries in, set 1/4000 in Tv and winder on H pushed the shutter button and brought her firmly down on the living room carpet and it just started singing! Thanks again, can't wait to start shooting with this great camera. P.S. Same trick worked with an older EOS Elan I just picked up.

Ian: I am curious if all the pictures with the dark band were flash pictures. It sounds like you might have had the wrong flash synch speed. That should only happen if you have a non-dedicated (non-Canon brand) flash which forced you to set the shutter speed manually and you set it faster than 1/250. Come to think of it, it may be that some non-Canon brand flashes will only synch at speeds slower than that. Another possible explanation might be shutter curtain bounce or lag. Since this is a vertical focal plane shutter, if it lagged slightly or bounced on closing you could get the pattern you describe. I don't know if the metal focal plane shutters are prone to that, but I once had vertical dark bands from a horizontal (cloth) focal plane shutter in a Praktica camera that were diagnosed as "shutter curtain bounce". Hope this help Bar Corvallis, OR

I bought my T90 about a year ago, and it has until now given very good results. Can anybody help with the following problem - if it is one. Having just returned from a trip abroad, and put about 13 slide films of various types (Fuji Velvia & Astia, Kodak Elitechrome) through the camera, I have noticed that on quite a number of them (say 5%), there is a dark band along the top of edge of the slides. This "band" is between 2 and 4mm deep, and the full width of the slide, and more or less parallel. There does not seem to be any obvious connection - such as with the same lens (3 different lenses used), or processor. Is this a camera problem, such as mirror not locking completely out of the way, or the shutter not opening fully?

Thank you very much Zak. I did think it would be weird if I could set an exposure time in the bulb operation but since I'm not familiar to T90 I thought I'd better ask. The instruction manual can be hard to understand to someone who doesn't speak English so well... It's a pity that in Finland older camera accessories aren't very easily to be found. Anyway, I'll try to search for the command back and cable release.

Paula

Paula,
You've just missunderstood the "bulb" operation. In that mode, the shutter will be opened as long as you keep the shutter button depressed (up to 120 sec). During that time, the counter will show you (LCD) how many seconds elapsed. After each period of 30 sec, one "bar" will appear and counter will start from 1 again. So, you can have: three bars (each one 30 sec) + 30 sec last counting = 120sec (max counted "bulb" exposure time - if you need longer exposure time, there is no other solution than to "consult" your watch, or stopwatch).
If you want programmed, remote and wireless action of your T90 you will need to search for "Data Command Back 90" (optional, and very usefull part for T90). Ebay gives ocassional chances to get them. Hope you will find one close to Finland. Cheers.

P.S. While in BULB mode your camera SHOULD BE placed on tripod, and the shutter triggered by cable release 60T3, or by normal wire release attached to the contact socket (at the base of camera's handgrip) by adapter T3. Otherwise, the result photo could appear less sharp than intended.

Hey! I just bought a Canon T90 body and I'm today leaving for Lapland. I've just got a problem with the bulb-operation. How can I use exposure time that's less than 30 sec? The instruction manual says you can exposeure up to 120 sec by setting the time so that there are some "bars" in the display dial. But how can do it? Do I need a remote switch? I couldn't find one in the shops here in Finland. Thanks!

I recently noticed that the 50mm f1.4 lens on my T90 had some grease on the rear aperture blades. Will it affect the T90 performance? Shooting at a slower shutter speed, EEE sometimes appears on the T90. Could ot be the lens fault? What causes grease to appear on the lens blade?
