The Canon T-90 System |

Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Larry - T90 and polarizers: The T90 has a averaging and a partial spot meter in the pentaprism. The camera will meter accurately with either a linear polarizer or a circular polarizer. BUT, the spot meter is located in the camera body, below the half-silvered mirror. This meter will read accurately using a circular polarizer; but will give wrong readings when using a linear polarizer. Since this is a complicated explanation requiring some thought, Canon just gives up and says don't use a linear polarizer. Since I already own a cheaper linear polarizer; I use it with the first two meters mentioned, or I remove it, make a spot reading, re-attach the linear polarizer, and open up two stops for the filter factor. I have no problems using these methods.2. From : Ken D (kdurling@earthlink.net)

Larry - I can't really tell you the physics of it, but cameras that use a pellicle mirror - one that allows a percentage of light to pass through to the meter (or autofocus sensor) can be thrown off by light that is polarized a certain way. Think of the pellicle mirror as a ventian blind, and the light must all be coming in "horizontal" orientation to pass through. A linear polarizer will polarize some of that light 90 degrees and it will not pass through the mirror correctly, throwing off the meter. Now why a circular polarizer *doesn't* do that, I don't have the physics to explain. I just use them! ;-) ken3. From : Larry (elebel23@msn.com)

First of all, this message board and this site are the most useful source of info for Canon I could imagine. Thanks to all. Having recently acquired a T-90, I have two questions that I could use help with. The manual states that "linear polarization filters" should not be used. Why? Also, any suggestions for cleaning a seriously contaminated focusing screen (and probably mirror as well) without doing more harm than good?4. From : Brent Schmidt (bls@engdyn.com)

Does anyone know if you can modify the T90 so that it has a mirror lock-up feature?5. From : Brian (whaky67@yahoo.com)

Ken, Any alkeline battery will work ok. My impression, like Mickey, is the brand alkeline like Duracell, Varta, etc. last longer. Duracell also has their Procell range. I've used these in my T-90 as wel as in portable audio (discman) and Maglite's and they really seem to last forever. They also don't mind colder temperatures as much as reguler alkeline's. Little more expensive and not available in every store (a good pro-hardware store will carry them) are the disadvantages. BTW, I love the fact the T-90 uses 4 AA size Alkeline wich are available all over the world. I'm also thinking of buying a T-70, wich uses only 2 AA's, to use as a lightweight travelcam. Ken, I have been using a t90 for about 7mths, put alkaline batteries that I got from Lowes in it and have probably shot about 30 rolls of film , the batteries still show 3/4 charge.

Ken D, I have used nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, rechargeable alkalines (not great) and ordinary alkaline dry cells of various makes. My favourite is the Duracell alkaline which seems to last longer than the others and still has sufficient charge left, when the T90 signals a change, to power my Maglite for a considerable length of time. They are available almost everywhere. Just beware of those grey market non bargain bargains and check your "Best if installed by..." dates. I always buy my batteries from a retailer that has a good turnover. It is amazing how long they last, but always carry a spare set. To save space in one's always overcrowded bag, 6 will fit, horizontaly into a 20 exposure plastic slide return box and 12 into a 36 exposure box. I use 1/2 the 36 exposure box for fresh betteries and the other 1/2 for the used ones for their proper ecological disposal. Slip a thin piece of cardboard between the 2 halves so the terminals don't contact each other. Mickey10. HI folks - Just thought I'd introduce myself, being a newbie to this corner of the Net. I've been on the A-series board for a good while, and various other FD groups. I've been shooting an A-1, EF, FTb and have just recently bought a T-90, due this week. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the months to come, but I thought I'd start by asking if the T-90 is limited in any way as to what batteries it can use? I thought I'd have a set ready to pop in as soon as she arrives. Can I use lithium AAs? Is there a concensus as to what is the "best" for this camera? Thanks much, Ken Durling
