The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Mike, Your T70 also has safety shift-it's just not called that and you can't turn if off like you can with the T90. Personally, I always leave it turned off on my T90, and absolutely hate it when my T70 uses it.

Kevin, In theory, any Canon A(199a, 188a, 155a, etc.) or T(255t, 277t) series speedlight, any EOS speedlight that supports A-TTL flash, and any simple manual or auto-thyristor shoe-mount flash will work with the T90. The best to use, though, is probably the 300tl. As a practical consideration, some older flashes had a high sync voltage that can fry the T90 electronics, and should be avoided. Anything made by Canon should be okay. You should probably check anything else using a voltmeter. I would avoid using anything with a sync voltage over 6 volts.

With any flash, the important thing to remember is that your shutter speed must always be equal to or slower than the camera's maximum sync speed. On the T90, this is 1/250 of a second. Using anything faster will result in only part of the frame being exposed and the rest being black or nearly so.

Could anybody possibly list the flashes that are compatible with the T90. I've only just bought one and the flash I have doesn't seem to sink up with the shutter very well. Thanks for any help. KO

Mike - With the safety shift switched on, if you select a shutter speed in Tv or an aperture in Av that is outside the normal EV range for the metered scene, it will automatically shift them to a viable one. Ken

Huber...Like you, I now have a 20D. I had a T-90 and a pair of 300TL flashes along with all the off camera cords etc. I researched and discovered that the 300TL flashes can only be used in manual mode with the 20D. They are TTL as opposed to E-TTL which the 20D and EX series flashes communicate with. At least this is how it was explained to me. I gave my 300's away to my best friend's daughter who uses T-90's and will be buying myself either a 430EX or 580EX.

Ben: NiCD, NiMh and external lead battery always allow faster recycling times. In this situation, how fast power can be "drained" from the battery is more important than the overall "capacity". Even older 600mA NiCD batteries although could give less flashes were able to recharge the unit must faster than alkaline - it's the different "chemical design". A comparison may be made only using the same kind of power source, or a comparable one.

SkateboardPhoto: Metz hand held units are professional ones and should offer some features for sequential shooting, but they come in several different models. IIRC the CL-1 has no "winder mode", when in manual mode it will fire at full power and has no power control in that mode, it was one of the "basic" pro models. The CL-4 had it, up to 2fps, and the more powerful 60 CT-1 and CT-4 can reach up to 5fps, IIRC.

Raphael - Can't give you a definitive answer, but it seems entirely likely that the manual was written - and copyrighted - during the R&D phase of the camera, and thus predates its actual release, which i think is indubitably 1986. Ken

Hi!

This site and the Canon camera museum lists the T-90 introduced in 1986, but I have seen the official manual for this camera, and the last page is "copyright 1985". What I am missing here?

Thanks!
