The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

I have 2 T90's and a T70. My old AE1 has had it's day, so as you see, I am a Canon fan.

I had the EEE problem on my original T90 and lived with the problem for about a year, clearing the message by pressing the battery check button. Eventually it gave up completely and I had to send it for a rather expensive service (after being told by 2 camera shops that it couldn't be repaired). I am now starting to experience the same problem on my second T90 (which I purchased 2nd hand last year). Any clues as to how to stop the problem progressing or am I in for another expensive service?

My first camera now has a different problem. It will not wind a new film on. Whilst on holiday I inadvertantly fed too much film into the spool and closed the back. It tried to wind on and then jammed. Any ideas again without sending it for another expensive service?

I am thrilled to have found this site as my other problem has been solved by you, i.e. I couldn't trace an instruction manual for my 300 TL flash; I have now downloaded your version and will study it hard. I am glad to hear I am not the only one using this great piece of kit, you can keep your auto focus, I will stick to my T90.

Thanks

Paul

Lisa, If you have the T90 figured out,my advice, take it from Uncle Irwin is to get another T90 body. Shooting a wedding is something you love until some day you get the two cameras mixed in your mind. Irwin has trouble matching socks,so maybe I am not a role model, darling. Right now, if you can budget what you are talking about you can almost pick the champ of the litter. There are so many T90's for sale, its the best time in the world to buy a used one that has got little use and the owner is getting ready to buy a digital camera because he or she has been told to Go Digital. If you buy one from a reliable eBay seller, and you want a nice shooter, I am thinking five hundred will win you an ace camera that you get a week to test out. If you have the kishkes for wedding work, it is a great camera. My eyes have trouble focusing in the low light receptions, so I can't always catch the dance shot that I used to,or the flower toss. One of these days you will step up to autofocus. But why not stick with two T90's, and now get some nice flash accessories and you are in business with style. Best of luck, Lisa. Uncle Irwin, rubarb ruggelach to die for....

Can anyone tell me how to access (for replacement) the back-up cell (battery) inside the T-90?

Hey Lisa,
I too earn extra money with my T-90 !! (I have 27 weddings this year !!) I have two T-50's that I use as back-ups and for black & white film. The advantages are a) affordability - I think the last one I bought off ebay was only $100 US(with the flash that goes with it!!) b) compatability with all T-90 lenses !! and c) very easy to use - focus required, the rest is pre-programmed. Perfect for "stressful" weddings !!!!
I was also thrilled to find this site, the T-90 "gang" here is great !
I recently had an incident where someone told me I should upgrade my camera (I've had the dreaded EEE problem - still unsolved after a new shutter !!!) and my reaction to them was NO WAY - I'm not giving up my T-90 !!

I received my T-90 from my father-in-law about 3 years ago. It was a bit overwhelming at first as I have only owned point and shoot cameras. My father-in-law was declared legally blind in one of his eyes and could no linger use the camera. He had it sitting around for years and I needed to clean it up a bit. He did not know where the books were for the camera or the flash. Canon support came through with copies of the book for me (at the time my hubby worked for the company as a tech for their copiers). I had my problems at first, but after I got going, it was (and still is) wonderful.

I have been asked to photograph weddings and with the variety of lenses he gave me, I am earning an extra 5-8k a year doing something I love! I have decided to purchase a second camera as a backup, but i don't know of a camera that could come close to my T-90 and cost less than $800. Any suggestions?? My T-90 will still be my main baby, but I want a back-up to take some of the high pressure off.

I am so glad I found this website! It is great to have T-90 friends!

Irwin arguing against eBay,why not in the leastGotta love it buddies.Fortunes for all schmendricks, land of free enterprise, refuge from the teeming shores, yearning to buy cheap!!. Me and the family are going to start auctioning our latest sweet potato latke mix on eBay if I can keep up with demand. If this is the new wave Irwin and the wife want to swim with it not in the rip tides. And so eBay is a terrrific way to add to your Canon collection, especially the rare earth lenses, yummyand the data backs and stuff. However, like Mark says, if you buy a used camera at a great price, add on the cost of a CLA true, but maybe it will need more.(See Newsweek big cover issue on eBay the good the bad and the ugly for newbies.) My little T90 came OK used from a storefront, but I needed a new battery cartridge for fifty dollars (hidden crud) and a new screen for a few dollars more. And an eyecup for a few dollars more and needs a good cleaning soon. And no warranty, which doesnt bother me-I just bought another used one:-) what a juicy camera this is. I think I was really making a reply to whatsisname who wondered why the brick and plaster stores are so many bucks more than a place with no operating overhead, surprise! They keep an inventory, they check the gear, and maybe some (KEH and B and H) even spruce it up, noo?. So there is room for 1) used stores 2) private eBay dealers (most of whom are not pirates, and some even know what "minty" and "mint -minus" means I hope. Buy where your heart and digestion suggests. There are many strokes for many blokes. Be well, eat a hearty lunch, and enjoy this wonderful and really cheap hobby no matter how you cut the salami. Meaning- I wish I could trade off all the older Audis I am collecting. As Always, Irwin, Purveyor of Kosher Delicacies and Dog Treats in the Big Apple.

WOW, Irwin how narrow minded of you do you miss trust everyone?
Some of us live in little towns only about 3500 miles from your great city and ebay is the next best thing to Milk as far as I'm concerned I have bought a butt load of stuff of ebay over the last 2.5 years. I have been involved in buying or selling in over 500 auctions mostly Canon FD camera equipment and in my meager experience 99.5% of the people are honest. 80% of the people who get burned didn't ask questions. And every twenty year old camera that hasn't seen a repair shop in the last 5 years should be CLAed no matter where you by it. Would you by a used car and not take it in to see if the barkes are any good or have the oil checked. I can get a CLA done by a man with 35 years of Canon FD experience for a whopping $65.00 here in little Silverton, OR. What did you say it cost in NY? I currently own 7 bodies T-90 A-1's AE-1P's AE-1 F-1 and 19 lenses from 19mm to 600mm and all but a few items were bought off ebay. Over the last 2.5 years. I have bought a total of 16 bodies and over thirty lenses, Selling off those that didn't fit my needs. I understand the touchy feely side of buying from a dealer. But I drive a dump truck and if I can own an A-1 for 190.00 + a 65.00 CLA bought off ebay, Or walk into a used camera shop in Portland OR. 45miles away and pay 300.00 for one that some clerk has "checked out" with a 6 month guarantee (that still won't stop the camera from breaking down if it's going to) I'll save the $45.00 and be able to buy some film and know that the camera has been checked out by a guy I can trust and have for 25 years.
Thousands of camera items are bought and sold on ebay every day if it didn't work and the buyers weren't happy it wouldn't still be there. One thing about America if a business can't comethru it will go away. And ebay sure seams to be here to stay!!
I once figure up what I had paid for my Canon FD equipment on ebay and what it would have cost from an online dealer like B&H or KEH and I had spent just under $6000.00 for my ebay purchased Canon outfit the same stuff would have cost over $10,000.00 from the dealers NOW THATS a bunch of money.

I am looking for a Command Back 90 for the Canon T90 as well as the I screen (double corss-hair reticle) for the same camera. Would anyone have these for sale at a reasonable price?

Hey, you want to buy from eBay,why not. If you bid and get a very clean T90 for 400.00. So what if it needs some minor repair, that is going to cost no more than 150.00 with shipping to Morgantown,West Virginia. Hey, wait, if you buy an 8+ T90 for 550 from B and H with a six month warranty and return privilege it will probably have been checked and serviced. So if you buy the eBay camera that has been in the closet for seven years unused, then you get on the cruise at Cape Canaveral and you are ready for the snapshot at the Captain's Buffet and whoops you get the ugly EEE signal,oh boy, so where are you at. Irwin figures used means used and every camera breaks sooner or later. I think one that has been serviced by a place that specializes in cherry picking used stuff is the first choice. So if they have a bigger overhead then some shmuch who sells cameras on eBay,well that is commerce,I think. Me, I love to feel and touch. But next to that I buy from a new camera dealer that has a storefront in the best city in the whole world, New York, New York. A complicated camera, see all the problems can happen. A scratch or two is OK. So when did a little booboo bother one. Does it have an eyepiece. Chicken drippings. A box, you got to be kidding. I too watch the eBay. I like the pictures. Are they retouched in Photosnot though? Our friend, Irwin S. Haus of Irwin, Purveyor of Kosher Delicacies discriminating fressers.

A shop I know here in NYC wants $500 for an "average" T90,scratchs and all. Another place wants $600+ for "New-"(without box)T90...Are these prices insane considering that T90's on E-Bay,etc. seem to be going in the low to mid $300 range? If they sell at all...or are the shop prices resonable because you can deal with a "legit",hands on operation?
