Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

"frustrated" Steve - What you are doing wrong? You are not constantly exercising the T90 shutter. T90s will not, let me repeat, WILL NOT TOLERATE lack of use! I have owned 2 T90s for 11 years (22 years combined). Both worked perfectly for the first several years when I used both of them. I put one away and did not use it for perhaps 6 years. It worked perfectly before I stored it. The other I used constantly, and it has worked perfectly for its entire lifetime; it has never had nor needed a repair. I pulled out the stored one; of course the shutter would not fire. I had its shutter magnets cleaned and now it works perfectly. I sold the first one and bought an EOS. The second, stored one, I now use constantly, and have not had the slightest problem. You are not doing your T90 any favor by storing it! The camera is remarkably robust. But you MUST use it, often!2. From : Evert Doorn (edoorn.1@hccnet.nl)

hi everyone, i recently bought a T90 and after shooting some rolls or film i must admit it's an absolutely stunning piece of equipment (by the way, thanks again for your help J.L., haven't encountered the problem anymore).... need some advice, though...I have this old Braun Variozoom SCA 340 flash unit wich i used in combination with my old Minolta XG9 (nothing special but it worked fine; used it in manual mode most of the time). Of course, i don't have a Canon SCA adapter and they are hard to find for this flash unit....
So, now i'm looking for a second hand flash unit. I know a shop nearby wich has tons of 2nd hand Metz units for fair prices, but i wonder wich one is advisable to get, and what kind of functionality do i get with a 3rd party flash unit? Or is there some way to get the Braun unit to work on the T90? Of course a 300TL would be great, but i spend most of my remaining budget on a 135 mm f/2 lens ;), and i'll be using it mostly for fill flash anyway so a fairly simple unit would be fine3. Steve, I suspect noone can postively answer your grievances about lemon T90's because there are so few lemons.. I know that because so many people still use and sell this model and they are repairable and valuable. And I kind of think they dont seem to suffer shelf life fatigue even if most people arent as really reallyintermittent as you are. Most of us use it at least once a month. Electronics are not like wine and dont improve in the bin, but still yours is a dismal saga.. Logic suggests that your T90 was not repaired successfully or that the faulty component was not sufficiently diagnosed. And MAY NEVER BE. Maybe a larger assembly needed to be changed. In any event, here's what old Erasmus would do nolw. I would write a nice letter to Japan Camera of Norcross Georgia. Like so... Dear Japan Camera, I will forget Pearl Harbor and that woeful day of infamy honorable sirs, if I may successfully entreat you to extend your warranty for an additional month on the work performed on blankety blank invoice number of last blankety blank date. I have not had a chance to use the camera much during the six month period, and unfortunately I discovered that my camera is still exhibiting same symptoms nd must conclude it was not satisfactorily repaired despite its check and test. I was referred to you by Canon USA as a reliable source, and hope you will honor this request to evaluate the camera again.. Please advise me if the camera has some defect attributable to faulty manufacture, which I am beginning to suspect because of the pattern of continued failures, etc etc. Yours truly, Steve,,,Copy to Chuck Westfall, Technical Manager Canon USA. What is to lose. Present this as a CHALLENGE to their ace technicians! If the answer is more money, whoops, then I say cut your losses and buy another T90. Unless good Lord is saying get an EOS finally brother FD user, What does the rest of the gang think? E.B.B. ( More satisfaction to Curse the Darkness than Light t One Smelly Candle says her grace the Queen :-)) PS: Remembering that old A-1? Why not leave the camera in a bag at Stuckeys with a sign reading "Steal this fine camera. " No, I dont mean that. Good luck STeve.4. From : Steve (frasersc@earthlink.net)

Hi folks! I'm new to the site and frankly stumbled onto it out of sheer luck. I ask your forebearence as this is rather long and I apologize in advance. I'm not sure how to convey the problem with my T-90 without providing some history so here goes.
I purchased my T-90 new in 1986 as a replacement for my A-1 which had been stolen some months before. I used the camera infrequently as it is not the only one in my stable. Perhaps this has contributed to the recurring problem I seem to be having. And, as I have read back through some of the archived messages here, I sense I may not be the only one having this problem.
In early 1995 after ignoring my T-90 for many, many months, I pulled it out to take some photos for which I deemed the T-90 the camera-du-jour. I replaced all the batteries with new ones and inserted a new roll of film. After taking one or two shots the camera quit functioning. It just died. The "HELP" cue appeared in the viewfinder, and "EEE" appeared in the program LCD. I attempted to find a camera repair shop to fix the problem but was told I should send it to the Canon Factory Service Center in Norcross, Georgia, USA. In October 1995, I shipped the camera body off to Canon along with a brief letter explaining the problem. A couple weeks later, Canon sent me a notice saying the repair would cost $155.00 USD. I sent the funds and in about 10 days I received my "repaired" camera back. Technician's notes indicated that they replaced batteries and adjusted shutter units & magnets, adjusted shutter and meter, and adjusted the cam gear. I put the camera away, removing the bateries before doing so and ignored it for some time.
In December 1998 after pulling the T-90 out of the closet and installing new batteries I successfully shot a complete roll of 24-exposure color print film and inserted a new roll into the camera before putting it away. A couple weeks later in January 1999, I decided to use the T-90 again for a photo shoot. As I pressed the shutter release button for the first frame on this unused roll of film, the camera 'whirred' for an moment like it was rewinding, and locked up again, the same as the first time with the "HELP" and "EEE" fault cues.
I emailed Canon USA's Customer Service desk and was advised to write a letter to Canon USA's Customer Relations Division explaining my camera's history of problems. This I did and included an inquiry asking if the T-90 had ever had a product recall or a history of such problems. In mid-February 1999, Mr. Walter Lettau responded with the standard line about the camera being out of warranty and that there had never been a recall on the T-90. He advised me to send the camera to one of the "authorized repair facilities" provided on a list he enclosed with his letter. He further stated that Canon Factory Service Centers no longer serviced the "older" T-series cameras. So in September, 2000 I shipped the T-90 off to Camera Repair Japan, an authorized repair servce conveniently located in Norcross, Georgia; along with a sizeable collection of correspondence containing the camera's malfunction and repair history, and all related documents. A couple weeks later I received a notice that the camera could be repaired, for a fee of $136.00 USD. I sent the funds off and about 10 days later, mid October 2000, I got my camera back with technician's comments that repairs had been completed on the shutter release magnet, and that the camera was checked and cleaned to good working order.
I used the camera in November 2000, shooting one roll of 36-exposure color film and removed the completed roll. I re-loaded the camera and put it away in my closet. Two weeks ago I pulled out the T-90 to take photos of my son's birthday party. As soon as I pressed the shutter release, it locked up on me just as before. "EEE" and "HELP" cues were vividly screaming at me.
I'm very frustrated, if not angry with this recurring malfunction. I paid a good sum of money for what I believed to be an extremely high quality product and have been consistently disappointed by this camera's repeated malfunctioning. And, as luck would have it, the last repair job was only warranteed for six months so I'm one month beyond the warranty limit now. What, if anything, am I doing wrong? What can I do to correct the problem with this T-90 or do I just have a lemon here? Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Or, should I cut my losses and toss this thing in the sea to a permanent burial?
Thanks for your time, and thanks for listening. What's the vedict???? Frustrated in Florida, Steve5. From : Erasmus B. Black (africanqueen@hotmail.com)

Bill Shepherd, greetings you old radio slaver you,. Well, if there is a way to radio control a 300TL, I never heard of one and I'd hate to design one, except Canon did for their latest EOS model with the big price tag I read. Flash is about the same price as a T90 in decent shape. And Minolta has had it for years, but thats another story I'll let LeoFoo and Kai Pin tell you about other brand engineering.. Let's look at the problem you describe,. You have five contacts that transmit TTL and A-TTL information two ways between the camera shoe and the flash foot. So Canon provided that if you want to use off camera flash they gives you a couple choices: A. Buy a Canon coiled cable or B. Buy another kind of Canon cable, with distrubutor and extensions.Boy. Smart engineering but smarter marketing.. That keeps you collecting Canon accessories if you want off camera automation it sounds like here in the Channel Islands. But don't go away, not an insoluble problem, Why do you need off camera automation anyway. No real reason I can figure. Here's why? If I put a flash or two or three far like teh feet from my camera that I need to use a radio or a slave synch, then I pull out the Erasmus handy dandy incident light flash meter. Mine says Minolta on it. Then when I pop the flash or flashes, or flash and room light combo, I have a purpose- built reading read-out and I can play with it because I know the exposure in advance. (And you thought handheld meters were another piece of junk to carry, bad news guy.. TTL is handy, but here is where an accessory meter is sine qua non as they say in Bosnia Herzogovena. Buy one if you are going to do remote flash. And then trigger it anyway you find practical. But my point is that here is where you need to buy a used flash meter. Let the tournament now begin. Other opinions?... Her grace keeps me around t for such questions about her T90. I make up the answers as I need to to please the old gal. Cheers, E.B. Black6. From : Bill Shepard (wmshprd@webtv.net)

I have a T90 and 300TL combination, and would like to use Pocketwizard Plus radio slaves. As is, no can do, with no P C outlet. I could put a one pin hotshoe to P C adapter on the camera, but that disables the TTL function of the flash. Anybody know of any mods or adapters to let me use the pocketwizards?7. I forgot to mention one other bit. When I bought a used 300 TL I got the manual from whatshisname Craig the used manuals fellow here in the US of A. Then my aggravations REALLY began. Try figure it all out I'll dare to the daredevils.. This mode, that mode, FEL. front synch back synch. It's all mishigash. I say stay on auto pilot is best.. I used to make a simile you know: " It's not like this is rocket science." Now I say " It's not like this is advanced TTL off camera multi flash. Hah Hah. I mean it's just the Human Comedy, you know? Not to be a noodge, Syd, but maybe an e mail to the site maintainer," crollinger@hotmail.com" would help him to know about the download difficulty. There is so much available on the internet, I guess there must be a good reason most of it is in jpeg format(so it seems), huh. Like for instance the 300TL reference guide (better than your humdrum manual even Syd) on the Yahoo- yep- Yahoo FD site, also in jpeg format. Me, I am glad for PDF. I bought a couple shares Adobe stock once, the smart kopf guys in my book.. More power to them mavens at Adobe!
