The Canon T-90 System |

Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

There is also an individual effort to produce a PDF version of this T-90 Manual based on the Instruction Manual found in this T-90 website. But strangely, it doesn't work now. http://www.sokolowski.com.pl/t90.pdf2. From : Mickey Oberman (mickeyobe@internet.look.ca)

Carlos O. and Renee Jonson, Re; T90 Manual. The directions I gave Renee Jonson no longer seem to work. However, the manual can be accessed thusly."Go to" Main Index Page of Canon T-90 SLR Camera Website" near the bottom of this page. Under the heading "Concept/..." click on the very small green "Camera Manual". It works now - tomorrow - who knows.3. From : Carlos O. (terriblsoft@technologist.com)

Manolis P.
It depends on what you want the lens to do.
I have had a Vivitar Series I 28-105 f/2.8-3.5 for about 10 to 12 years and have been very pleased with the results. I used this lens as my primary for my A-1 until about 4 years ago when I got my first T-90 and still use it as my primary. It covers a nice range, although I agree w/ Mickey that 105 isn't much of a telepgoto and 28 is weak as a wide angle.
About 2 years ago I got a Vivitar Series 1 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 and have also been pleased with that, although I now find myself looking for a super wide angle, can you say fisheye :-)
If you want a general purpose lens, I think the Vivi S1 28-105 is a good choice. You won't get the bees in the trees, nor the stunning vistas you can get with a long telephoto or a really wide wide angle, but it beats swapping from a 35 to a 50 to a 90 etc, if most of what you anticipate shooting falls in that range
Other considerations: As i said, I had the 28-105 on my A-1 for 6 to 8 years and never had a problem. I have recently noticed that the T-90 I keep the lens on now has a minor loosesness on the lens mount. I guess even Tanks need to have a their treads tightened.
The older Series 1 VIvitars seem to have a heftier construction (and are heavier) than the more recent offerings. More plastic, less metal in the tube, although its my understaning (and my observation) that that optical qualities haven't been compromised. I have no problems with the optics of any of them (I also have the S1 70-210) but wonder about the durability of the newer lenses, especially if ther're going to get banged around.
As a general rule, if I can control the shoot, I use Canon primes, If I don't know what I'm going to face, I use zooms, which in my case are all VIvitar S1's.
DK on the Phoenix.
Tell us what you have now, and what you want the new lens to do.
Mickey, subject to my concerns about durability, try out the Vivitar S1 19-35. I got mine at B&H and I think they still have them. B&H say they have a good return policy, 30 days I think. I've never had to return anything to them though.

Manolis, The following is strictly my own personal opinion and I am sure others will differ.
I have heard that the Vivitar 28 to 105mm is a very good lens but it is neither a very wide wide angle nor a very long telephoto. It's neither here nor there.
On the other hand 19 to 35mm is a great range for a wide angle zoom. I have never heard of Phoenix lenses but if the quality is acceptable I would not hesitate to buy it. Where is it available? I would love to get one. I would, however ask to try it first.6. From : Manolis Papagiannakis (papagian@nat.vu.nl)

Hi, I am thinking of buying some new lenses for my T90- I would therefore appreciate any opinions on the Phoenix 19-35 mm (f3.5-4.5) and on the Vivitar 28-105 mm (2.8-3.5). Thanks, Manolis7. From : Pawel (pawel@sokolowski.com.pl)

Manolis, Its time to get confused. Ready. I ran a set of meter redings on both of my T-90s using three different 300TLs, all using a Canon 50mm f/1.4. I got a half f-stop difference in Av mode @ each of f 4.0, 5.6, and 6.0, between the readings w/o flash and using the FEL preflash. In Tv mode I again got a half stop difference @ each of 1/30, 1/45, 1/60 and 1/90. Curiously I got larger aperture openings or slower shuter speeds when the flash was on and the preflash triggered. As I said in my last post, your situation sounded normal to me as that was what I had recalled from the occasions I had used FEL, and I wondered why I was now getting the 1/2 f-stop difference.
Answer: The lens I use most often is a 28-105mm f/2.8-3.5. When I ran some random meter readings using the f/2.8-3.5 I got the same readings with or w/o FEL preflash, regardless of focal length. I tried a few other lenses and got the same result with a 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5, but again got the half f-stop difference with a 50mm f/1.8. So depending on what lens your using there's nothing wrong, or we both have the same problem. What were you using?
FWIW, last spring I shot my neice's wedding using the 28-105 for outdoor afternoon shots with FEL, and they turned out fine, perfectly exposing the bride and leaving the other subjects a step or two behind her lightly underexposed. Shoot some exposures with FEL and see how they turn out. As I said a couple of weeks ago, I find the FEL & A-TTL modes of limited value for interior or nighttime shooting w/o a tripod. Hope this helped, Let us know. TomR.9. From : Barry Conway (barry.conway@dial.pipex.com)

Hi there, Just wanted to leave a bit of reassurance for any UK-based T90 owners. My trusty old T90 started EEEE'ing so I got a replacement/backup from ebay. The newcomer worked for a while and then stopped. No response from shutter button. I had picked up details for John Lowe on this message board and gave him a ring. He clearly knew what he was talkking about on the phone, and I trusted him with two T90's. When they came back they were shiny and clean - inside and out. Fully functional and fully serviced to boot. Great service. Extremely reasonable prices (in my estimation). I thoroughly recommend this man's services. Just for the record, I have no connection with John Lowe whatsoever - other than the fact that he fixed my T90's. Thanks John!!
Regards, Barry (Oxford, UK) By the by, from the conversations with John it sounds like he does the same great work for other classic makes, so you migh want to bear that in mind. :o)10. Hi, I have problems using 300TL with my T90. The description of the problems in my first post wasn't very clear so I post again. I use T90 on the Av or Tv mode with the lens switched to A. The 300TL is switched to "mode set", first curtain sync, FEL mode. The expected behaviour (according to what I've read) is that when I press the spot metering button, there will be a preflash and the exposure indicated on the focusing screen will be affected by this preflash. But what it happens is that there is a preflash, but the indicated exposure is the same one I get when I use no flash. What is the use of the preflash then? To me it looks like the light meter and the flash cannot synchronize. Has anybody experienced similar problems? Can this be fixed somehow? Contact me if you think that any further details are needed. TIA, Manolis
