The Canon T-90 System |
|
Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Hi Mel:
I absolutely agree with you on the T-90 viewfinder. It is the best viewfinder that I've seen. The magnification ratio is higher than most SLR, and although yellowish, is excellent for focusing even in rather dim light (I'd guess around EV-5), and under bright sunlight I can even focus without my glasses on (-3 diopter!). Just to show how good the venerable T-90 is. I absolutely love this camera!!!2. From : Luigi D. Sandon (cp@sandon.it)

Mel: here you can find the instruction to build an interface to connect the data back to a PC via RS-232: http://www.sigma957.org/dmb.html It was really a bad marketing decision to tie it to the MSX computers.3. From : Mel Snyder (melsnyder@gmail.com)

Just a word of thanks to the message board for helping me to salvage my T90 from what appeared to be the dreaded EEEE malfunction.
About a year ago, basking in the wonder of my Nikon D70 system, I decided it was time to unload my film equipment, planning to hold on only to my long-lusted-after Leica M4P system. I opened my Canon bag preparatory to photographing my T90 for eBay when I noted the dreaded EEEE on the LCD panel. Calls to known service centers like KEH darkly warned me that costs for repairing it could run from $100 up. Several service people told me they wouldn't touch a T90, that it was the toughest Canon to service.
Since then, I have decided not to unload my film equipment -- rather, in fact, to aquire a sample of every film camera I had used in the past roughly 50 years since my late photographer father handed me a Minolta Autocord at the age of 14. Three weeks ago, my teenage kids surprised me with the last camera for my collection, a near-mint Canon IVS2 rangefinder like the one stolen from a Manhattan office desk 34 years ago. All the 14 cameras on my shelf worked fine -- except my T90.
Today, I googled the EEEE problem and found this discussion. I followed the "Zak" cure, and in the process, came to a shocking discovery. My EEEE problem was NOT a shutter failure -- I had simply accidentally pressed the preview button several years ago! Of course, with the lens set to "A" and the DOF preview button pushed, the LCD panel displays EEE!
I forgot how wonderful it is to look through the viewfinder of a T90; I have a nice set of lenses for it, including an 85mm f1.2 L. On Friday, I took delivery of an Omega B22XL enlarger, eBay'd for just $26 with 2 lenses, and I am about to teach my 16 year old son the glory of "real" photography before I lose him to the digital world in which he will live. Now I have to get new batteries for my "Data Memory Back 90" that I bought at Odeon Camera in Paris back in 1986 -- while the computer it was designed to work with never came to the USA, it is great for testing new film and recording exposure data. I look forward to using this 20-year old toy again!
Thanks to you all for inspiring me to get my T90 working again.

Hi: For all of you who has a broken T90 battery holder, BH photo has it for sale. I saw one selling for 75USD(!), cond. 9. But for those who love this camera, I believe it is worthwhile. I bought one last year for 65USD (cond. 8, with one side of it cracked, but useable). I know many will just buy a used body from EBay, but I won't want to see my beloved T90 die just because of a broken plastic lever.5. From : mike v. (antythingon2wheels@yahoo.com)

For Antonio: Antonio: Hello,
Got a question. Have you ever heard of this before: Within the last week the camera has started to fire slowly & the pointer which indicates the Hi/Lo/single function for film advancement has started to flash & the shutter doesn't sound right. The film advance numbers are not increasing during this time as well. I've only experienced the EEEE thing once & is not present now. Any clues??? If I send out for repair can you recommend anyone. I saw on ebay a Brit who seems to have a good service package offering. Let me know, Mike
Ps: I tried to send you an email but your address noes not seem to work.

To Mike v. It is now message 1650 due to we keep adding messages at the top, to go to msg 1650 click on 165 below (each page has 10 messages). Maybe now is in pages 164, 165, or 166. Anyhow this is what "frustated Steve" wrote for Zak's method: "Zak suggested I remove the lens, and film, open the back to observe the shutter, set the shutter on continuous firing in the high-speed mode and hold down my shutter release button. I did exactly as he suggested and as soon as I pressed the shutter release, my EEE/HELP alerts cleared, the camera unlocked and now seems to be working fine." Try high speeds (above 1/500 and low speeds (1/2), since I read for some people only worked on high while for other on low. I hope you get yours working. Cheers.7. From : grant (stobe14@hotmail.com)

Hi, For those of you who have the EEE/Help error (Shutter stuck). You may try Zak's solution in this board (message 1641-42, http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/canont90msg/index.php3?show=1640)
It didn't work in my case, but found in another board something else that you may want to try thanks to Taylor (UK): "Remove lens and bring the body down squarely and sharply on a carpeted floor In vertical position. Don't forget to fire it every other day and a good rapid set off between each film". This worked in my case and for the last week everything has been ok.
I was already thinking in unmounting the shutter (you can get the technical doc in Canon's web page), but it's a bit scary. Good luck with yours.10. Hi T90 lovers. After hearing so many good reports about the T90, I am very keen to purchase one which is in good condition. Does anybody have a T90 (in nice condition) for sale?
