The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. Regarding T90 shutter magnets: Terry has it pretty much right. A fellow at work who used run the local Canon repair facility says it's just the glue used to hold the laminations in the electromagnet core together. Over time, the glue migrates towards the pole faces and makes them sticky. Pressure on the pole pieces fixes them together. Cleaning the pole pieces usually does the trick. You have to use something physically aggressive like typewriter paper soaked in isopropanol drawn between the pole faces. The new F-1 & the other A & T series cameras all use the same basic concept and are prone to this fault. I've repaired my F-1N by doing this and it works perfectly. It pee'd me off that I gave away an A-1 for dirt because the repair guy wanted $200 to "replace the shutter magnet". My friend also recomended a silicone spray on the pole faces to keep the glue from sticking. Good luck & cheers,

KaiPin, Terry and/or the Dr. I went looking for the instruction manual for the Command Back 90 over the weekend and found a dead link to Mr. Rollinger's web site. The Command Back 90 manual can now be found at http://www.canonfd.com/command.htm, while Mr. Rollinger's home page is now at http://www.canonfd.com/choose.htm. I posted this on the message board rather than notifying you by e-mail so others could get to the sites if needed before you can do the update. TomR.

terry, it is possible to keep the shutter open for storage by pressing the shutter release with a time program of lets say 10 seconds. during the shutter is open, remove the battery pack and it keeps open until you put the battery back - but i'm not shure, whether anything else is affected by doing so.

edward - The magnetizing problem is not due to power on the camera. The way the shutter works is that there is a magnet that holds the shutter cocked. When you press the shutter release, power is applied to an electromagnet that is opposite in polarity to the permanent magnet, thus cancelling out the effect and releasing the shutter. When stored for a long period of time the permanent magnet magnetizes the release and the electromagnet is not strong enough to cancel out all the magnetism. This may be why after getting it working, firing a bunch of times helps everything work better, the electomagnet helps neutralize the parts that shouldn't be magnetized. Dirt can cause additional forces that effect shutter operation also. Probably the best way to store a T90 would be with the shutter released, but you can't do that (at least I have no idea how to do that).

Richard - Yes, I think so. According to the Ref Guide, you have to take the meter reading with the flash in the OFF position. Set the ambient exposure manually based on that reading. Then set the flash ON in either A-TTL or FEL mode. To control the ambient exposure adjust the shutter speed. To adjust the flash setting use the ISO override. The flash reads the ISO set in the camera body. Another interesting little thing. If you set the flash to FEL but do not use the Spot Metering button, you get TTL Auto operation. So putting the flash in FEL gives you either mode easily.

Carlos Rivero - I wish I had seen your message earlier. I was in Caracas when you posted it. I was looking for camera shops, but don't speak or read Spanish, so never found any. Maybe next time.

Murray - Welcome back. I was away for a while myself. I think your problems may have been battery related. And, yes, I do still have the LC-2.

Erik - The T90 can have problems with the shutter and the electronics. I know of no way of figuring out whether a particular camera will have trouble or not. One thing is, shutter problems seem to sometimes come from lack of use.
