The Canon T-90 System |
|
Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

I have been using a Canon AE-1 program for many years. ( I bought it new in 1979.) I've recently become interested in macro work, and I want to upgrade to the best manual focus Canon body available (i.e. not EOS).
I had intended to buy a used T-90, but then I noted that a used F-1 is about the same price as a used T-90.
I have looked at the specifications of both cameras carefully and on the face of it, the T-90 appears to be the better camera, except that it lacks a mirror lock-up. One would therefore expect it to be higher priced.
Can anyone tell me why the two are about the same price? Is the F-1 better - or is it just that it is a "classic"?
Thanks
Allan

Steve (no longer "frustrated"),
Thank you for your words and glad to hear that my "medicine" can cure T90 common EEE/HELP failure, and not only on my camera. I can addd that after this treatment, which I tried on my T90 three months ago, the camera is working perfectly and I passed two rolls of film through it. No problems at all.
For all the other T90 folks - I hope that the mentioned procedure will be working in all similar cases and that will save money and nerves. Finally, I have to mention that I cann't cope with the fact that you must use T90 almost on the weekly basis if you want to avoid "EEE/HELP" problem. It seems the same to me like you buy top-of-the-range Mercedes and have to turn the engine on every day/week, if you want to avoid general break down of it. Masterpiece must stay masterpiece (what I assume T90 is to be). Zak3. From : Steve (frasersc@earthlink.net)

Hello! This is "no longer frustrated" Steve. Thanks to the very kind assistance offered by several of our readers here I was able to obtain a fix for my T-90 and did not have to send it off to obtain factory-level repair. Zak suggested I remove the lens, and film, open the back to observe the shutter, set the shutter on continuous firing in the high-speed mode and hold down my shutter release button. I did exactly as he suggested and as soon as I pressed the shutter release, my EEE/HELP alerts cleared, the camera unlocked and now seems to be working fine. I want to publicly thank Zak and all you others who offered your advice. I am very appreciative of each reply. Thank you all!4. From : Brent Schmidt (bls@engdyn.com)

My T90 has developed a water spot on the vertical LED Display inside the viewfinder. The external display also has some discoloration to it. Can these be repaired?

Dave: I don't know if that's always the case. Several times, mt t90 showed HELP in viewfinder and EEE in LCD because I held the battery check button too long. It was fixable (luckily) by removing and reinstering the battery pack.

A simple temporary fix to the EEE problem is to push the battery check button.7. From : John. (john@4duncalf.freeserve.co.uk)

Hi I am a trained repairer on the Canon T50,T60,T70 and T90.I have repaired literally hundreds of these cameras and there is not much I dont know about them. The T90 problem of EEE can be cured by strip down and clean of the shutter unit including magnets and switches.Flashing arrow symbol on the LCD and not firing is caused by dirty release magnet and most other faults are repairable.I am based in the UK and if you want to discuss a repair or just ask a question please e mail me.
Regards,

I'm most appreciative of all the responses to point me in the right direction with my recurring malfunction problem. I'm pretty certain that the malfunction is due to infrequent use of the camera though I can't be 100% certain.
I have tried to clear the "EEE" and HELP" alerts by removing and reinserting the battery pack, but as soon as I release the shutter again, the alerts return and the camera locks up.
I have written a letter as Erasmus suggested and am sending it and the camera off today to see what the good folks in Norcrass have to say. I will keep all y'all advised......
Thanks again.

I've been trying to find the easiest way to bracket exposures on the T90 almost as automatically as on my EOS3. Is the following the easiest/quickest way (it's not so bad when your thumb and forefinger get used to it)?
1. use shooting mode L or H (not single).
2. use manual mode (choose Tv on T90 with lens off A).
3. focus and meter scene (using average, partial, spot, or multispot) and keep proper exposure displayed/held in T90 viewfinder (say, for example, 1/250s, f11) by continuously pressing exposure display button (on back of T90) with thumb.
4. while still keeping thumb on exposure display button, manually select aperature on lens as recommended by exposure reading in the T90 viewfinder (in example, f11).
5. while STILL keeping thumb on exposure display button, fully depress shutter with forefinger to take first shot at f11.
6. while STILL keeping thumb on exposure display button (T90 viewfinder should still read 1/250s, f11), add 1 stop on lens aperature and fully depress shutter with forefinger to take second shot at f16.
7. while STILL keeping thumb on exposure display button (T90 viewfinder still at 1/250s, f11), subtract 2 stops on lens aperature and fully depress shutter with forefinger to take third shot at f8.
Thus, you'll have 3 frames of the same scene at 1/250s and f8, f11, and f16.
It works great, but is there an easier way?

Steve,
Definitely try the suggestion by Heir Black (Dr. S and/or Irwin) to see what the good folks at Japan in Norcross will do for you. Promptly. The longer you wait, the less likely they will be to help you out on an out of warranty repair.
If they won't help, back in the archives there are procedures for crashing and resetting the camera's programing. I don't recommend the crash as I have no idea if it works. As I recall you may have to get the camera to accept a long exposure command and the temporary fix to the HELP/EEE problem may get you there. Some people have posted that removing the battery magazine and reinserting can clear the HELP/EEE display as a temporary fix. (DK if you can put it right back in or have to wait for some period).
I would not try the crash method until you exhaust other possible solutions, but if you get to the paperweight stage, what's to lose.
Let us know what Japan in Norcross says, and how the whole problem turns ouot generally.
Bon chance,
TomR
