The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

The MIR on-line manual indicates that the FL 19 mm f/3.5 R Retro-focus lens cannot be used on the T-90 for mechanical reasons. As this lens is a long time favourite of mine, it was disappointing to see this fact. When you compare the rear part of the lens with a FD 50 mm f/1.8 (with chrome breech lock ring), the lower half of it protrudes 1.5-2 mm deeper into the camera than the FD lens. I have tried to mount the lens on the camera body: No problems. I have then slowly pushed the stop down-lever until it locked in place: No problems. The meter seems to function OK as expected in manual stop down mode. What I cannot check is the space needed by the mirror when it swings upward. Before I take the last step and press the release, I would like draw on the members experience. Do I risk ruin the camera, or will my late model lens (no. 17047) work? ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott: I'm new to T90's and this is my first post here, but I'm a longtime Canon user. There are several earlier recommendations for Steve on these pages, and he just returned one of my newly purchased T90's a few days ago. CLA, clean the infamous shutter magnets, new eyepiece, new switch panel on the rear, leader-out modification. Six month warranty, all for $143, not a scratch on it. He had the camera only two days. I'm very pleased!

Scott - Contact Steve at Steven40@aol.com. I had the exactly the same problem. He did a CLA, the charge was $90. The fix for your camera might be might be different, but sure sounds like the same problem as mine.

I sent my T90 to UT Photo in Burbank for the problem of the flashing shutter arrow and no shutter operation. Someone suggested it was the shutter release magnet needing cleaning. UT sent me an estimate for an overhaul for $210.00, $8.00 parts. Is this about right? I have no idea.

Horst Scheid - Not really because whiel the first curtain will have released, the second curtain is still cocked. But I don't know if just keeping the first curtain magnet working well is enough.

My mother told me that ninety percent of fixing is cleaning. What she didn't say was how long it takes to get to the part to clean it in a camera. Careful with the silicone spray, because I found it makes the enamel paint on older cameras dissolve and maybe is not so safe as a shutter coating. I don't know about magnetism. I used to demagnetize my tape heads until someone said they don't really need it. How much magnetic field can there be in those shutters. Anyway, the magnets don't do a thing for athritis let me tell you. Its a religious belief and I can't quarrel with faith healing. What works works, huh. All shutters should be used. If there is some lubricant anywhere and there always is, it keeps from getting sticky. And the batteries get to do some work and not just chemically digest themselves. :-) So how come the eBay cameras say "only four rolls run through this T90" like that's good. Better the ad ought to say 'exercised regularly' for shutter fitness. Thanks for listening to musings of an AK. But a big fan of the camera which is a shtarke machine.. Some information would be appreciated from owners of Command Backs & 300-TL flash units. Mr. Rollinger's Command Back manual indicated that when the 300-TL is set to SE power mode, and the Command Back interval timer is activated (for intervals longer than 5 minutes, the flash automatically power down until 1 minute before the next interval shot. I'm understanding this as the flash near immediately powers down but in my case the 300-TL takes its normal time to power down, a bit over 5 minutes. Do I have a problem with my Command Back?, my flash?, or have I misunderstood the manual? Also, based on what Terry and Duane have posted regarding the T-90 shutter magnets, it would seem the best way to avoid magnetizing the shutter to lockup would be to pick it up every now and then and run it through a few cock & release cycles. Is my assumption correct? Thanks for the help. TomR.
