The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. Bharat,

You need the S type adapter to fit the Angle Finder B onto the T90. I do not know if this adapter will fit on the 350D viewfinder frame. I seem to recall that the S type adapter was supplied with the Angle Finder, however I did buy mine specifically for the T90.

Glenn.

Hello,

Hope this is within the bounds of the board...if anyone is interested, a few days ago I posted The Canon T90 Performance Book on Ebay. Sorry, had I know about this board I would have not listed it there.

Thanks,

Hullo Robert! Thanks for the inputs.
All quiet on the Western Front, i.e. CPS USA. No news from them so far about the vertical shutter button inspite of 2 reminders.
I guess you are right on all counts.
The FD 50 macro: I am no expert but except for colour fidelity (easily fixed in Photoshop RAW) I have found very no noticeable difference between pictures from it + EF adapter and the EF 100mm macro on a 350D. My attempt to make the macro double as a normal/90mm portrait lens stems from the fact that I am just trying to reduce the weight in my camera bag before it reduces mine! (I am growing long in the tooth; add to that the fact that I shoot mostly in the upper Himalayas between 12,000 and 20,000 ft and my bag includes Pentax 67 stuff too. At the end of the day even 100 gms feels like a kilo, believe me! Fully loaded, I feel more like a professional sherpa coolie in a Hooker expedition circa 1905 than an amateur enthusiast!)

The FD 80-200 with adapter becomes a 375mm lens I am told. Hand holding that focal length these days is out for me. Guess will have to sink for a 300 IS lens or switch to the Pentax K10D for eternal and stable bliss. Any other better suggestions from anyone are welcone, please.

By the way, can any one advise me - which is a better option quality wise: Scanning slides in a high quality slide scanner (not drum) or digital copy using a 350D+macro lens combination?
The very best,
Bharat

Bharat,

If you can find the rather expensive and rare Canon converter, then your zoom could produce very acceptable results. This is dependent on the converter actually working with that zoom, as the optics of the Canon converter protrude into the rear of the lens barrel. Thus any lens that has the rear elements close to the mount, will not physically fit. The converters for sale on eBay and elsewhere only have a single element, thus will fit any FD lens and range from rubbish to reasonable. I have one which is engineered very well, but the optics are rubbish. A second from a different supplier gives very good images, but the actual construction is very poor.

Your Macro lens is a slightly different proposition. Canon also produced a FD/EOS mount adapter, this has no optics and thus will not give focus to infinity. However adapter can easily be produced from the cheap converter, by removing the optics. So if you really want to use the 50mm as a macro lens only, make yourself the adapter, it will produce excellent images used this way. I cannot see why you would want infinity focus with the 50mm macro on your 350. Your autofocus lenses will produce better images than the 50mm, used with the converter as a 'prime' of 75mm(?).

Glenn.

Dear Robert,
Thank you for your response dated 24 Jan 07. I am also led to believe that this item may be available with Canon Professional Services. Shall explore that avenue as well.
I now have another question incase anyone here has explored it: In what manner or to what extent is image quality affected if one uses a FD lens on a EOS body via an adapter with an element that permits focus at infinity? (I am thinking of using it with a 50mm macro or the 70-200/f4 L on a 350D.)
Wishing you and all other members well,
Sincerely,
Bharat.

I to have suffered the HELP/EEE shutter problem on both my T90's. I managed to free them and I'm now using the cameras more frequently, does anyone know of a good camera technician in Australia that could do the cleaning of the shutter magnets and general service.

I possess a T-90 with a Command Back.I have a recurrent problem with it. In cold weather, it jams. The shutter doesn't open and the arrow in the display panel, aligned with "single" starts blinking and doesn't stop until I turn off the camera. It stays jamed even if I bring it indoor. This problem happened twice before.I had my camera fixed but the repairman didn't ever say what was the cause of the problem. What is wrong with that camera? Can I reset it? Is someone has encountered a similar problem? I love this camera but Canada has a cold climate for many months. If someone could help me, I will be very thankfull. Yves C.

Ken,

I cannot comment on the 'pro modifications' program you mention. However all the T90s with PC sockets I have seen, all had the leader out mod, but no vertical release buttons. What I can state; is that I purchased my 2 examples of the button, from the stock of a local Canon dealer who went bankrupt, a few years ago. They were contained in boxes similar to the ones that contain the off camera flash shoe. Perhaps they were a special order, or from cameras sent to Canon for modification.

Glenn.

If I'm not mistaken, that vertical shutter release was part of a mod for pros offered in limited numbers for the T-90 only, not commercially, and consisted of the vertical shutter, a leader-out film rewind, and a PC socket on the prism.
