The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. Thanks Ken for the reply. If this only happened with one of my lenses then I would agree with your diagnosis. However, every one of my f/2.8 aperture lenses registers at f/3.5 on the camera. One might think that the registry pin in the camera is stuck, but if I move the pin with my finger, the maximum aperture on the LCD changes. I guess my T90 is going to have to go into the shop for an adjustment. Ouch... I wonder what that will cost me? Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott - In my experience what you describe is usually the result of a maximum aperture pin on the lens that is ever so slightly too short. using the stop down lever probably provides the extra tiny bit of force required to report accurately. What you can do is take a very small piece of masking tape and apply it to the maximum aperture pin on the lens in order to lengthen it a bit. Looking at the lens from the back, with the red mounting dot at 12 o'clock, the maax ap pin is the round one at about the 8 o'clock position. HTH Ken

I have a Canon T90 and it has a problem. When I use lenses with a maximum aperture of f/2.8, the maximum that the camera will recognize is f/3.5. The camera correctly recognizes my 50mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/2.0, but not my 200mm f/2.8 or 35-70mm f/2.8. If I use the lens in stopped-down mode, the meter will adjust the extra half stop. (i.e on automatic it meters 1/60 @ f/3.5 and stopped down it meters 1/90 @ f/2.8).Has anyone ever experienced this problem? Is there an easy way to fix it? Thanks,

Besson - The FD 200/2.8 is a fantatstic lens. Very sharp, contrasty, minimal distortion, neutral-to-warm color (IMO). It's fast enough and has high enough resolution to easily withstand teleconverting, either with the 1.4xTC for a 280mm f/4, or with a 2xTC makes a great 400mm f/5.6 for things like handheld sports or bird photography. There have been three versions of the lens: the FD 200mm f/2.8 SSC with the breech lock mount - identifiable by the silver breech ring; the nFD 200mm f/2.8, and the nFD 200mm f/2.8 IF. The last has internal focusing, so the lens does not change length and the front element does not rotate - an advantage when sing a polarizer. These two nFD versions can be distinguished from one another by the fact that the IF version has a daimond-plate pattern on the focus ring and built-in hood, and the non-IF version has parallel rings in those spote. AFAIK, there is little or no difference in the optical quality of these three versions. The differences will be primarily in the ergonomics of the above-mentioned factors, as well as your preference for breech or bayonet mount. I own a copy of the nFD 200mm f/2.8 IF and it goes on almost every outing I take. Ken

My Canon T90 has developed the infamous EEE/HELP message. I need to have it repaired. I heard mixed responses canont90.com, so I am not sure anymore. There are others, but I don't feel conifident about sending the camera off to them. There is a few posts about a guy in Reno, NV. Who is he and how I can view his history and work? Yes, I am in the states. Thanks.

Tom has a good point, I forgot about that. Of course you would have to consciously put the camera in spot metering mode for that to happen, but perhaps it was already there... Ken
