The Canon T-90 System |

Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Being a new user of a T-90 too, I have a couple of question: 1) Can I use NiMH rechargeable batteries (2100ma) or could I damage the camera? Better to use plain NiCd betteries? 2) I'm a bit puzzled by the TTL flash mode. Being a long-time user of an A-1, I was used to set aperture on the flash and let the flash to get the "correct" exposure. The T-90 in "program mode" sets both shutter speed and aperture, while A-TTL and FEL try to "average" the background with subject exposure, resulting in long shutter speeds. How can I select an aperture and let the camera cut off light when enough? Simply taking of the aperture ring form A or there is another way?2. From : Luigi D. Sandon (cp@sandon.it)

Brian: go to www.canonfd.com and download the T-90 instruction book if you don't have one. All camera I knew that have interchangeable lens allow lens to be changed when the film is loaded, or they would be far less useful. If you are new to photography, look for a good book or site to learn the basic. The T-90 has some advanced features (i.e spot metering, exposure shift, etc.) that require some knowledge and skill to be mastered, but when you did, they give you a lot of "power".3. Brian, Change away. Even with the lens on, there's nothing to keep light out of the mirror box except the lens cap. It's a great camera and you scored a great deal on the purchase. Use it regularly, or exercise it periodically without film in it, and it should serve you well.4. From : Brian Wagner (damngates@yahoo.com)

I'm new to photography and picked up a T-90 at an estate auction for $100 and so far I absolutely love it. The question I have is: Can you change lenses while the film is loaded? I assumed this would be the case, but others have told me that you can on some cameras and can't on others. Could somebody set the record straight for me? Thanks, Brian5. Luigi - The only trademark problem with the T-90 is the shutter magnet failure, which results in an EE EEE display. Without being a technician, I think the only way you could check this is to test it WITH film in the camera, as well as without. I would fire shutter speeds across the range, to see if it "sounds right." 1 sec is a pretty good one to judge the accuracy of, too. But make sure you get no error messages. Beyond that, I'd check the usual things, including the LCD for bleeding. Take along a meter or a known good camera with meter to check the meter readings on it, and try it in P, Tv, Av, etc. Be sure to try the spot meter, as it uses its own sensor. Check the battery compartment for corrosion. Go under the right palm panel and try the battery check, motor drive and film rewind functions (after you've checked the shutter!) Take 4 fresh AA batteries of your own in case you have any doubts. Take along a flash and see if it fires, and indicates in the VF. I'm sure you and others can think of more. Ken7. From : Luigi D. I'm about to buy a T-90 to help my old A-1. Is there anything I should check carefully peculiar to the T-90? I will be able to check it before buying, and I'd like to know what to check. Thanks.8. From : Mark Wahlster (awahlster@aol.com)

There are some low quality third party adapters that have an optical element that allows for infinity focus your images will suffer I'm told quality loss can be seen in 4X6 prints. Stop down metering only. cost around $100.00 Hama sells one B&H photo carries them sometimes. Canon Pro shop produces a mount adapter that could be used with the 200mm f2.8 IF nFD and the 300mm and longer telephotos. It had a 1.26 magnification factor so if you combine this with the 1.6 of your digital using a 20mm lens the shortest focal lenght you would have would be a 403mm. These are SUPER rare and will sell for over $500.00 on ebay Stop down metering only
Canon makes a Macro adapter to allow the use of FD close-up gear you can use this to mount most any of the FD lenses to an EF mount body but will lose anything but macro range focusing. SO in a nut shell the answer is NOT REALLY. Some people are looking into the idea of modifing the mount on an EF mount camera to accept a FDmount lens at the proper 42mm registation. The problem is how to sink the mount the 2mm nessisary from the 44mm registration of the EF mount. Hope this answers your question.9. From : Terry McCarthy (terrrymccar@brunet.bn)
