The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

I have a range of Canon cameras from early rangefinders to modern digital bodies but the camera's I love ( I have 2) aret the T'90's. Why? Hold and use a T90 and find out - this alied to FD lenses and (compared to EOS L lenses) dirt cheap prices the combo is unbeatable! I work professionly and okay the digital convenience factor is lacking but if u don't need to take a million pics to get a goood result this is the camera! Rarely use my EOS analog's.
But regarding repairs - stupid people are throwing away T90's on ebay at the moment so grab a bargain there rather than repair the one you own - the price difference is minimal-and with luck and some research on the web, you migh start your 'defective' T90 up again- I did!! PS Typed this at the end of a bottle of Italian wine-sorry for any spelling issues!!

Does anybody have a battery compartment cover for a ML-3 Ringlite that they're not using? I've checked the junk bins at my regular shops, and so far, no luck. Thanks for any help. TomR

The most amazing thing! I also have a t90 with the 85/1.2....one of my t90's JUST suffered a battery meltdown (panic) in it's batt compartment...wow....the t90 is BRILLIANTLY designed! The battery material was isolated to the compartment (which for all intents and purposes) is nearly completely sealed off from the rest of the camera...another reason why the t90 is my all time favorite! I was able to 99% clean it, so not trip to the camera doc necessary! BTW: I want to start using my films again...does anyone know where I can get a good usable case, that will keep brassing of my t90's to an absolute minimum while out in the field? I've always basically babied them, but after this experience, I am not afraid! What a BEAUTIFULLY designed piece of equipment!

Thanks for the reactions. I had a look on the provided link and now I have an (one) idea about the voltage. Now I have to find out what my digital camera can endure. Strange that it is so dificult to find those figures.

Henk: when using a dedicate flash on a camera it was not designed for, it is better to check where the additional contacts go (in addition to the voltage). If they touch one of the camera flash contacts, the camera may receive the wrong electric signals, and work in strange ways or even be damaged. In this case is better to mask the contacts with non conductive tape. Sometimes within the same brand older units works on newer camera and newer units may work on older camera. Canon for example look to have added two new contacts for the 300TL mantaining the two older ones used by previous units, with the same functionality (for example, a 199A works on a T90). But be careful because even newer units may use the same contacts in a different way.

Henk, I've used a 300TL on my A-1 without any damage. Depending upon the camra, you will lose some, if not all, of the 300TL's auto features. You should check the trigger voltage of the 300TL to see whether it is within the limits of your camera. Or, you can use this info. It is believed to be reliable, but has not been verified.

Hi, has anyone ever used the flash, sold with the T90, 300 TL on another camera? I want to use it but I cannot find specifications concerning the electric power, so I'm afraid of destroying my other camera. Who tried it on another body?

Billy: I have read some info saying 580EX will work in TTL mode with T90. However, I doubt if it can offer all the functionalities that 300TL can offer, say FEL. To be 100% sure, send an e-mail to your local Canon support office. I guess you have a digital body and a T90 and you want to have a flash that works for both of them. From the B&H website, 580EX is currently selling at about USD 390. 420EX is at USD 180. 300TL is, on average, less than USD 100 on EBay. If you are an average user, there are lots of 580EX features that you will not use. Perhaps it makes more sense to buy a 420EX and a 300TL. You can get the best from both world and save about USD 100. Just my thoughts. Thanks. Regards, Anthony

Question, would I be okay using a 580ex flash with a Canon T90, and be able to have all of the same functions, that are available with a 300tl flash? I'm wondering if I would have to go ahead and purchase one? Any insight someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
