The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. My old reliable T90 just died. Symptom is that the shutter does not open. When shutter release button is pressed, there is a slight click, but I don't believe the mirror raises or the shutter opens. Batteries, film installation are good. Same symptoms in all modes. Anyone have an ideas?

Pleas reply to my email: jimmy.dailey@crc.com

Thanks,

To Roy Sinclair try www.keh.com. I bought a command back 90 from them and found them good to deal with, and they usually have a fair supply of T90 stuff available

I would be very interested in obtaining a data back for my T90. I have only recently upgraded from a Canon FTb which I loved byut cannot use too well now due to the fact that its totally manual and my eyesight is now not so good.
The T90 is brilliant but as I purchased it second-hand to use with my old canon lenses I did not know of all its capabilities.
I mostly use a Canon 55mm 1.2 Aspherical lens which I purchased about 30 years ago. It's brilliant for portraits and also good for low light conditions. Despite trying many other canon lenses I find it one of the most universal. Yes it lacks zoom but I can live without that.

The data back sound interesting and if anyone has one which they wish to part with, I would be grateful for contact.

Roy Sinclair

PS As a rider to the query on the internal battery - these are quite easy to obtain through computer shows in the U.K. as they seem to be standard in a loyt of PC's too.

Zak, Many thanks for your observations on my epistle on HELP/EEE . I can assure you that the first roll was perfectly exposed, proving that in my case, pressing the battery check button did reset the controls, even though it was for only one exposure at a time. To a novice, it would appear that the shutter cannot therefore have been locked up. Could it be that there is more than one fault that can result in the HELP/EEE signal?

On a different subject altogether, I am considering combining all the archived message boards into one Word document. As far as I can see, this would enable me to use the search function to quickly locate particular words and hence topicstopic. Has this been tried already, was it successful, and is it any better than the existing keyword search within Message Board.

Marvin,
Go to the "Archived messages" at the bottom of this page. Select pages 201-250 and then item #34.
I live in Toronto and found Canon Canada to be worse than useless. Morgantown is quick and reliable and, I believe, their prices are fair. My camera is in regular use and has never given me an iota of trouble since they fixed it.
I have never heard of the internal battery going dead. Perhaps they should be permitted to diagnose the problem.

My Canon T90 has died and all indications is that it is the inner battery that needs to be replaced. In Ottawa, Canada, this special battery is neither available from camera repair shops nor through Canon itself. Does anyone know where I could get this battery from? Please reply to my e-mail mmiller@myexcel.ca. Thanks very much. Marvin Miller

To SYD:
It seems that there are couple of variations to clear EEE/HELP problem and to put T90 back to life. When my camera failed the same way (six months ago) I tried all possible "games" with it and finally found "HIGH continuous firing" treatment. It brought my T90 back to life, as well as several others of the people to whom I suggested the method. Your "winding" method maybe works the same, and would be great if we have back to this board some results and comments regarding both methods (for the sake of all the other T90 owners who could encounter the same problem).
What makes me curious is your state that you've got perfect even the photos, which were on your first roll (when you had to press "battery check" button after every single shot due to EEE/HELP signal). From my experience in the case of EEE/HELP problem, the shutter does not open at all (stays locked - stacked), so you have as result, a completely empty (unexposed) film. By pressing the "battery check" button you just reset the firing mechanism, but the shutter doesn't unlock itself - it remains stacked and therefore after the next shot you have again EEE/HELP).
Finally, EEE/HELP tends to appear again (meybe there is thruth in the statement of "shutter lubrication") but here above mentioned method clears the problem and prolong normal working of the camera. During last six months I had another one EEE/HELP stroke, but the "medicine" still works.

Some weeks ago I wrote in asking for help when I suffered from the dreaded HELP/EEE problem after a friend had handled my T90. I appreciate all the advice I received, and I would like to place on record what happened subsequently, in case it helps anyone else.

As I explained previously, pressing the battery check button, re-set the controls, allowing me to make an exposure. Unfortunately whenever I pressed the shutter button, back came HELP/EEE. This happened several times. Removing the battery tray and replacing it did not improve matters. After repeating this procedure several times to no avail, I decided to follow one of the recommended solutions and in preparation pressed the re-wind button to remove the film.

The film duly re-wound and after lifting the cassette out and closing the camera back, I was surprised to see that the controls had again re-set. Purely out speculative interest I pressed the shutter button, and was delighted to note that HELP/EEE did not appear. I tried this several times and still HELP/EEE did not appear. Greatly heartened I proceeded to put a roll of film through the camera which progressed normally. Both this roll of film and the previous one, which I was using when the ‘fault’ occurred, were developed, in each case I am pleased to say, with perfect results. This includes all the shots I took up to the point where I rewound the first film prematurely.

Just exactly what this proves is open to debate. It may all be down to my inexperience of the T90, although I strongly suspect the friend who handled it immediately before the fault flagged up, had something to do with it. Again, someone whose opinion I respect has suggested that it was due to a lubrication problem on the shutter, which will re-occur. I hope he is wrong, but whatever the reason, I am mightily pleased to have my T90 back working again.

My t90 is good but the pc was installed and I am wondering what shutter speed is used? Plus the 300 always sets the shutter speed to 1/60 whenever turned on. It never is higher. Any suggestions?

My T-90 went totally dead about 6 weeks ago. I got an online estimate from Comet Camera Repair in Philadelphia (1209 Walnut Street), URL: http://www.cometcamera.com/ The DC/DC Converter was bad, it turned out. They gave me a free online estimate of $169.95, not including a 5% discount for using their online service, and the repairs were made, including general cleaning and lubrication, and checking and adjusting all functions to specifications, for the quoted price. The camera works like new. The tech told me that users' Emails discribing the problems are read by the technicians themselves. I am totally satisfied. Check it out if you need repairs.
