The Canon T-90 System |
|
Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

LCD have a finite life, and the most common fault on the T90 is 'bleeding' around the edges. However; on the examples of T90 screens I have examined showing this problem, it has been slight when compared to the bleeding found on the screens of many data backs. New screens are not available, though NOS items can sometimes be found. My two early examples have have a hard life, but the screens are still fully functional and unmarked. The only point I will make is that I always switch off, at the main switch, between sessions/subjects.
The internal lithium cell in the T90 is soldered onto a flexi-circuit, this is located under another flexi-circuit located on the top righthand side of the prism. The cell powers the memory circuit for the ASA setting and exposure counter. This cell is not required for the working of the camera, and if you do not switch off the main battery circuit, between exposures, nothing out of the ordinary will happen. Switch off or remove the main batteries between exposures, you will loose the exposure count and have to reset the ASA.
Whilst it is true that the EEE indication, does not seem to occur in a camera that is used on a regular basis. This does not mean that the camera does not have the underlying factors that lead to the problem. As I have stated before, the T90 needs regular servicing, otherwise a problem that is normally solved by a simple CLA suddenly becomes a major replacement of parts - if you can get them. I have even seen quotes on the internet, stating that the EEE fault is down to Canon using the wrong lubricant during manufacture. A look at the official lubrication charts soon knocks that tale on the head.
As I have noted before, the T90 was not in production long enough for any long term snags to be found and sorted. Keep them properly serviced, they will just keep on doing the job they were designed for.2. From : Mickey Oberman (mickeyobe@rogers.com)

Michael, I have had my T90 since 1985. That is 22 years. I have never had a problem with the LCD screen. The EEE/HELP seems to be one of the more common problems with the T90 but I think that if the camera is used regularly and not stored away for weeks or months it may never occur. Lack of use seems to bring on that malady.3. From : Gordon S Walker (eoslensman99@yahoo.com)

I believe the T90 LCD is powered by a small battery which needs to be replaced after a few years. I think it is a service part only and cannot (easily) be done as a DIY project.
My T90 hasn't been used for a few years and the LCD is just fine.
My data memory back however is not working at all. :-(4. From : Michael (MichaelHanson02@yahoo.com)

I have the AE-1P but i am looking into geting the T90. If you you look up the T90 on wikipedia it says the LCD screen goes out every 5-10 years. Is this true and if it is how much is it to replace and how readily available are the parts.
P.S How often is the EEE/HELP problem.5. From : Huang Shao Hui (bongsf@hotmail.com)

From what I understand, T-90 supports A-TTL and TTL flashes, as well as the older genaration Canon flashes (those with 3 contacts). I use my 540EZ on T-90 with no problem on A-TTL. Of course you'll need to remember the zoom head. If you tilt it, it becomes TTL. Hope this help.6. From : will Australia (will@mail.com)

Hi, I have a t90 and also an eos 1n, equipped with a 430ez flash... so to state the obvious question... Does anyone know whether you can sucessfully usee the 430ez on the t90... I've mounted it on there and manually set the flash to 50mm, the focal length i was shooting at, and it went off.. but i don't know whether the t90 can meter correct expoure with it as it was produced for later model camereas... any advice would be appreciiated, cheers Will7. There are many quick fixes quoted for the T90 'EEE' problem, ranging from the simple to the truly bizarre. As a past professional user of these cameras, I would suggest that present owners/users take the appearance of the 'EEE' as a sign that the camera is ready for a CLA. This is especially important if the service history of the camera in question is unknown. A quick fix, on a camera that has never been serviced and is not used on a regular basis , is the quickest way to produce an unusual door stop/paperweight.
As previously stated, I have put literally 100s of rolls of film through various T90s. People tend to forget that the T90 was in production for a very short time, thus Canon never addressed the few problems that did appear. Had the camera had a production run like the A1, I am sure we would have seen as similar program of modifications over the life of the camera.8. From : mickey Oberman (mickeyobe@rogers.com)

Iacob, Standard is Eye Cup-T. A FLAT cushion. Not really a cup.
Anglefinder A2. (Gives an inverted image)
Anglefinder B. (Gives an erect image)
Magnifying Lens S.
Correction Lenses S. (In 10 diopters from +3 to -4)
There are also eyecups not made by Canon. My favourite is a no name with a real eyecup shaped like a teardrop that really excludes all peripheral light. Mickey9. From : Peter (petersmith@imaginet.co.za)

I have two T90s and experience intermittent "EEE shutter problems" if I don't use them frequently. Otherwise they work perfectly.
If the shutter sticks, I put in NEW batteries (not rechargeable) and leve it switched on. It ususaly comes right in an hour or two. I fire off the shutter at H speed for a minute without film. That seems to clear rthe problem unless I forget to use them for a few months!
Hope this helps some of your readers who seem to write often about this issue.10. Iacob, the casing might not be metal, but it sure is a very very high-density plastic, which is probably better. It doesn't rust, and it reduces internal condensation by changing tempratures easier than metal.
The not-rusting bit is great for me, as I shoot around salt water a lot. That stuff eats metal for an afternoon snack.
