The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Randy - FD lenses only have a maximum aperture pin, not a minimum aperture pin, so yes, you must remember what your lens is capable of. As to your second question, it is very common for the maximum aperture pin on a lens to be ever so slightly too short, causing the camera to indicate, for example, a max aperture of 3.5 on a 2.8 lens. The fix is to put a very small piece of tape - I use masking tape - on the end of the max ap pin, lengthening it slightly. Sometimes it takes two layers of tape. The max ap pin is the round or trapezoidal (on some nFD lenses) non-moving pin at about 8 o'clock looking the lens from the back with the red dot at noon.

I wasn't able to find my question in earlier posts and I haven't yet recieved my T90 manual. I have tried to read up on the FD lens series. So I hope this isn't too stupid of a question. My basic question is, why does my T90 offer higher f-stop values on my two early FD 50mm and 28mm lenses than the lens is capable of? Am I just suposed to be aware that I am looking at an impossible f-stop/sutter speed combination and make the correction? Or is the T90 so amazing that it actually gets one to two more f-stops out of my lenses?

Another question is perhaps the reciprical of the previous. I have two old non Canon FD mount lenes that when attatched to the T90 are not capable of offering the widest aperatures. Is this because they are lenses that were capable of working with different camera systems depending on the mount supplied? Is that low f-stop just an optomistic value? Well, thanks and thanks again for this great web-site.Randy

Ken, I have a 300tl in hand. It has 4 settings, 1) ttl, 2) fel, 3)M hi, 4) m lo. Only the m hi (read manual high) and m lo(manual low) would be useful on any of you cameras except the t90. The t90 and the 300tl comunicate, making ttl and fel possible. The 300tl makes fill flash easy with the t90. My flash photography has improved since I have moved from a ftql then AE1 to a t90. If you have a eos camera then I would look into a flash for that, maybe it would work well with the t90 also, plus give you some more control and the eos.

I haven't bought a 300tl yet, but anyone know if it is usable on other bodies besides the T-90, and if so what features are retained? I'm specifically thinking of an A-1 and an FTb.

Ian - YOu can get one real cheap (like $6.99) at "manuals2go" on eBay. There may be a free download somewhere, but I'm not aware of it.

Randy - I also got a T-90 not too long ago, and when I asked what were the best batteries for it, I got several responses that said - in essence - any will work. I think it's one of the beauties of the design - no specialized batteries. I decided on Lithiums for their light weight and long life. I can't imagine a problem with NiMh cells.
