The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Jonathan,

I had a similar problem recently regarding the advance mode indicator arrow, although my T-90 didn't shut down. It finally dawned upon me that the film winding sounded like it was taking longer and longer. Lo and behold, when I checked the batteries, they were way low. Changed the batteries, no flashing arrow, no slow film winding.

Don't know if its your solution, but try it.

DK on the warranty querry.

TomR.

let me just say that i love my t90. it has until now been perfect in through the uk, the middle east, india, and east asia, and my home of seattle. i am now in working in tokyo. i have two problems, that as a relative rookie, i am not sure how to approach, the manual doesnt cover.

The small arrow next to advance speeds, ie, single high low, started a while ago blinking, rendering the shutter button notusable. i got around that by pressing the yellow subbotton so that the blinking became a solid arrow, and could take another picture. it now only blinks, regardless of what setting, even the timed 2 and 10 second modes, count down to nothing. what should i do, does any one know about this. the manual covers other blinking warnings, but not this. i very much need this camera.

secondly, i am experiencing a few scratches to my slides. should i take it in to canon jp. how often is best for cleanings and checkups? I have a warranty from mack new jersey, good till december. do you think they will cover japanese repairs. i mean it is the same camera. Should i take it in for a cleaning? all parts including the mirror which i am fearful of messing with. any insight would greatly help a college age low budget guy who loves taking pictures. thanks for any help!!!

Peter, If the flashes sometimes work and sometimes don't it sounds like you are indeed getting poor connection in the battery compartment. In my experience, it is worth trying several things. Sometimes a different brand of AA cells will have a longer tip and make a better connection. Sometimes not. Sometimes you can check this connectin business by crumpling some aluminum foil and using it to stuff between the battery and the springs or the pads. Of course I know you have tried an electronic spray cleaner and a pencil eraser already and smelled the compartment for the residue of corrosion. All of those are worth trying to see if there is a clean circuit. Even a meter to test the circuit isnt such a bad idea. Good luck. A good flash. Maybe one of the best there is or was. I have two 300TL speedlites that have the same problem. They both have lost battery connections, so appear dead. By sliding the battery cover half on and off you can 'sometimes' get them to power up. This problem first appeared intermittently, then became consistent. Canon service fixed one of them about 18 months ago, but the problem has come back. The problem occurs with both NiCads and alkaline batteries.

I've searched most of your archives and haven't seen a similar problem, so am wondering if I'm doing something daft? Any ideas? tx for your help and a neat site. peter

Mark, Re: your query to Steve. I tried the focussing screen L. It is a most unpleasant accessory and blacks out more readily than the other screens. It may take some searching on the internet to find the C (preferably) or D screens but it will be well worth the time and effort expended. Mickey

Hello Steve

Really like your pictures. Wish I had that Tamron lens and flash. Do you know anything about the Focusing screen "L"?
Have not been able to get ahold of the C screen and wonder if the L will help with Macro shots.

Hi Mark, T90's must go with the surnames ;-)

I agree with Mickey regarding the focussing screens, I spend a little time now and then chasing butterflies and occasionally succeeding - see above webpage. T90, Tamron SP90 and Speedlight or Ring flash ... oh and steady hands - no tripod !! Only just found this reflector, hope I haven't broken any rules by putting my web site here, I'm only an amateur but hope you might like the piccies on there. Best wishes from the Island of Cyprus. Steve Bowden

Peter Simner - I guess from the email address you're in the UK - if so the hood you want is the BS-52, they are not too difficult to find - take a look at mxv.co.uk or ffordes.com. As for the eyecup, they are next to impossible to find and in any case tend to be VERY expensive. The eyecup for the EOS-1 is a pretty good fit and can be obtained from Jessops etc (about £10). Cheers, Mark.

Mark Bowden. A split image or a microprism screen will black out at the small apertures used for macro and also when used with telephoto lenses.
Use the Plain Focussing screen C or the Plain Focussing screen with grid D. I also find the Angle Finder B with Adapter S to be very useful. I use screen C for all my photography. I find that the briliant image (a previous camera was an ExactaVXiib) in the Canon viewfinder requires no focussing aids.
