The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Gabriel, re jewellery closeups - I am not a macro expert and I am sure that you will get more detailed advice from the list. However some sort of macro lens would appear necessary - I personally have used for years a Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 macro which I have been very happy with for flower closeups etc. This only goes down to 1:2 - but down to 1:1 with the appropriate 2X extender etc - which may not be enough for your purpose. You can also extension tubes on standard lens etc and if you decided you are really getting into it also use a bellows. These do lose f stops though - but if you are going to use artificial lighting and a copying stand this may not matter. A ringlite/macrolite might also be of use - but beware of having to send perhaps quite a bit more money with relatively minimal 'return'for your 'investment' if you do not really use it that much

Hello Folks, My father just recently gave me his Canon T90 with several accessories: 300TL Flash, lense extension, and a 52mm (70-200mm) lense. I'm currently interested in taking close up photographs of jewelries...Anyone here know what lense or accessories would be appropiate? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Gabriel

Zach, Its not quite clear what you mean when you say the flash "flashes" twice. Depending on the mode you set the flash to and/or the angle of the flash head, you will get a pre-flash at 1/20 power or an infra red "flash" when you take an exposure reading, including when you press the shutter release half way. If you're getting a pre-flash and then a double flash when you take the shot, I'd say you have a problem. Give us some more details on what you flash is doing. Howard, glad to hear its working out. Let us know how the test roll turns out. TomR.

Help please! I have a very faithful Canon T90, but in the last six months or so I've been having trouble with the film not rewinding on, or Error coming up on the screen. I'm told the problem is with the magnets (quite common I'm told) such that the film jams. BUT the cost of reparing this because the camera body is no longer made is about £200 ($300), which amazes me - and anyway I can't afford that sort of money. Surely such a repair shouldn't cost so much money; does anyone have any suggestions please. The main reason for not wanting to change my camera system is that I have so many FD fitting specialist lenses. Thanks in advance - Christopher veritasca@btinternet.com

http://www.canonfd.com/300ref/300ref.htm The above link was sent to me by Steve Kovach. It is an online reference guide for the 300TL. Should answer a bunch of questions. Tom, I took the camera outside and TTL metering seems to be much happier there. I shot 36 test frames inside and out, with notes, so I should have a better handle on things soon. Thanks again, Howard

Hi, I have a question. I recently purchased a used 300tl for my t90. This is the first time I've had a flash for my T90, so I'm not sure if this is normal or not...... each time I take a shot, the flash "flashes" twice. Additionally, it sends out a flash when I push the shutter button down 1/2 way (to meter). Is this normal? should I consider taking the flash back? Thanks very much, Zach Korb

Tom, Yes, you helped me quite a bit. I have had no experience with TTL metered flash photography so I did not know what I was seeing. I will say that I am disappointed that the famed 1/250 flash sync speed of the T90/300TL combo seems a lot less useful now since apparently the only way to invoke it is in Tv/A-TTL mode. That makes it good for taking pictures of, what, the sun? Also, thanks for your quick reply. I bought this flash on the condition of being able to test it for a week and I thought I had a lemon on my hands. Howard

Howard,Sounds like your 300TL is OK. Its my understanding that in either A-TTL or FEL mode, the T-90 (in either TV or AV mode) measures the ambient light and judges the distance to the subject as well as the differences in lighting between the main subject and the background. This is covered in better detail in the Canon Reference Guide for The 300TL Speedlight. If you meter w/o flash and then with flash in A-TTL or FEL you should get the same shutter speed and aperture values. When the shoot is taken the T-90 will shut the flash down when it determines that the proper balance for flash/ambient light exposure has been achieved.

I find the A-TTL and FEL modes to be of limited use indoors, especially for people shots (they tend to move) unless you're also using the proper temperature auxillary lighting. Outdoors, or in other situations where you have sufficient ambient light, the FEL mode is particularly useful for recomposing the frame after setting up the flash exposure for your main subject. A-TTL in similar conditions is useful for reducing or eliminating the shadows caused by the ambient light sources. In short, based upon your description, your 300TL/T-90 combination is working as it should, OR I have the same problems with two T-90s and three 300TLs. Let us know if the above helped. TomR.

I just purchased a 300TL Speedlight unit to go with the T90. It seems to be in good condition, but I am a little concerned that something is malfunctioning in the shutter priority/A-TTL mode. If I set the camera and flash to Program mode and stand 3 feet away from a light colored wall, I get an exposure of 1/60 @ f22 as read in the viewfinder (ISO 200). If I switch to shutter priority (Tv) and use the default speed of 1/125 while setting the flash to A-TTL (and meter the SAME spot), I get a flashing f3.5, indicating an improper exposure!? This is not at all what I would expect (a one stop opening of the aperture to compensate for the one stop increase in shutter speed would seem correct). Even after switching to a f1.4 50mm lens, the metering seems way off in Tv-TTL mode. I can find NO situation where the camera approves of a 1/250 shutter speed. And using Av mode at, say f5.6, results in ridiculously long shutter times (like 3 seconds).Does this mean that the in-camera sensor is not working or is there a problem with the flash? Or is it the operator?? The manual is not really helping me here and I have nothing to compare it to. Thank you in advance if you can shed any light (ha) on this. Howard
