The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

To James W. Cope: The dedicated module for T90 is SCA 311, you will get normal TTL flash operation, second curtain sync, and automatic shutter speed control. However, you will not get FE-L and A-TTL for fill-in purpose, only 300TL provides all that dedicated functions.

Alan Swartz: thanks for your post. I tried emailing John Lowe at the email address given below, but got it bounced back by the Mail Delivery System. A search on the 'net didn't get anything, either. All: does anyone know how I can get the T90 shutter released as Alan suggested and as outlined in my post below?

I just recently purchased a T-90 body on e-Bay. When I received it, all I did was turn it on and up it came, ready to go. I cranked on an old but magnificent 500mm F/5.6 FL lens, loaded a roll of Fuji Superia 100 and went out wildlife hunting. Didn't capture any wildlife this morning, but the metering system of the T-90 worked well with this old manual lens, [and it is not an FD lens], and once I set up an good steady base for that lens, I can take some very interesting images. The T-90 completes my collection of Canon manual focus bodies (F-1, T-90, A-1, and AE-1 Program). All have motor drives which are, without a doubt, indespincible. To me, motor drives take your mind off of advancing the film and leaves it on image making. The T-90 is a great camera. It is modern, yet practicle. It has so much exposure capability and if handled properly, performs equally, if not better then, any other Canon body. Granted, it doesn't focus automatically, but, when one isn't yet ready to spend the dinero, it will do the job. The only thing that I wish the T-90 had was a 250-exposure back like the F-1 and the F-1n. One question I have for those who read this message. I have a Metz 45-CL-4 handle mount flash unit. Does anyone know if there is a dedicated module that will fit the T-90 for this flash unit? They are available for the F-1 and the A-series, as well as the EOS series bodies. Let me hear from you.

Johhny Blue,m You (probably) have a stuck mirror release magnet, which commonly happens when a T90 sits unused for a long time. A service job will cure it and delay its return, especially if the camera is operated periodically. If you'll look five messages previous, you'll find a reference to a T90 repairman in the UK.

HELP!!! My trusty T90 has let me down. I took my ailing, elderly Mum to the seaside at the weekend and got some great photo opportunities, but couldn't get the shutter to release. Everything works fine at first: the meter, the film transport indicator, etc., until I press the shutter release, when all I get is a faint click from inside (like the soft click it makes when testing the batteries), but the shutter does not release. The display in the viewfinder goes off, and the arrow pointing to "Single" on the LCD display flashes. I can even get the self-timer to count down, but still the shutter won't fire. I confess I hadn't used the camera for a while, maybe a year or more, but the batteries in it, although low according to the built-in BC, had not corroded. Fresh batteries do not make any difference. Any suggestions? John

I believe that you must keep the flash output at a minimum to get that short duration. The flash tube makes a certain amount of light. Its photographic intensity is changed by shortening the time the tube emits light. I once read where someone had set up two flashes very, very close to the hummingbird, so as to minimize their output. He then used a 300mm from several feet away. I'd assume he must have used an extension tube to reduce the focusing distance. You would probably want to use the 300TL(s) in TTL Auto mode with the widest possible aperture in order to shorten the duration.

Interesting question. The 300TL manual lists its minimum duration at around 1/20,000 sec, which should be short enough! Now the question is how does one force that value? I'm thinking . . . Ken

How can I change the power level of the 300TL to a shorter duration to freeze humming birds wings in motion? Thanks, Tom
