The Canon T-90 System |
|
Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

For what it's worth, with a set of fairly fresh alkalines and my 300TL set to Manual Low, I can only get four or five shots when pressing the test button as quickly as I can. As my T90 is currently in the hands of UPS and I await the arrival of a replacement from KEH, I can't experiment with how this compares with actual shooting on the T90.
I've managed to get about 20 or 30 flashes from my Vivitar 283 NiMH batteries and the sensor set to yellow(lowest power) provided that the subject was within a couple of feet and the bounce head was set to straight ahead. It did get fairly warm doing this, though, which I imagine would happen with most flashes intended for still photography.
As for using the 300TL on other cameras: You can use it on EOS film cameras in A-TTL mode. It will not work on EOS digitals, though, as they only support E-TTL. What I've been told on this is that it's technically impossible to accurate measure light reflected off of a highly reflective CMOS or CCD. For this reason, A-TTL metering, which relies on the light reflected off the film plane, can't be implemented on DSLRs.2. From : Ken D (kdurling@comcast.net)

Huber -
I've never heard of such a thing, and given that the 300TL was so closely designed with the T-90, I think it's highly unlikely. But I have to say, oening an Elan 7 and 420EX myself, that the E-TTL flash system is such a step forward, such a reliable and intelligent flash system, that IMHO you should buy a current EOS flash to use with your 20D. A 550EX or even the new 580EX. Using an old flash on it just doesn't make sense to me, as there isn't any design integration.

I own a T90 and I am still very pleased - even I had to change the shutter twice.
I also own a lot of equipment eg 3 flash 300TTL and the Macro Ring Lite.
Two month ago I bought a EOS 20D :
My question now is : does anyone know if there is an adapter available, to use T90 flashes with the EOS cameras ??
Kind regards Reiner4. From : SkateboardPhoto (bergoo@bigsky.net)

Right now I have a Metz 45 CL-1 handle mount flash. I will be firing it using a pocketwizard plus radio slave? I still need a cord to hook the flash to the slave. Anyway, would my Metz be an acceptable flash to use for sequential shooting??

AFAIK flash units that allowed for a motor usually tell it explicitly. And usually it was obtained using a low-power mode to allow for fast reciclying times. Usually a fixed power is used to avoid a "missed" shoot may deplete the energy wholly and ruin subsequent shots.
For example, my Sunpack 4205G can work with a motor drive camera at 1/16 power (or lower), using a "fast" power source (NiCd/NiMh, external lead battery). Maybe some external batteries like those made by Quantum may help, but at 4 fps it means the flash has to recharge in 0.25 secs.
I really don't know if the 300TL is the right unit in such a scenario, maybe I'd choose some more powerful unit, i.e. those from Metz.
With the 300TL, I'd try to set it in Manual Lo, and using a fully charged set of NiCd/NiMh batteries.6. From : Ken D (kdurling@comcast.net)

P.S. - I think Lithium batteries are the fastest cycling out now. Someone please correct me if that's wrong. Ken7. From : Ken D (kdurling@comcast.net)

Skateboard - Depending on your batteries it may not evcen work for two frames. There are too many variables to give you a precise answer. Type of battery, where in the battery discharge curve you are, temperature, condition of the flash, distance of the subject (power output) , on and on. Why not try it? Film is cheap, experience is precious. Ken8. From : SkateboardPhoto (bergoo@bigsky.net)

When you say "not for long" are you talking ten frames? five frames? Could you be more specific please.

Skateboard - Not for long. Battery drain will lengthen the recycle time before long to the pont where it won't work. Perhaps with an external battery pack. Ken10. Can the speedlite 300TL keep up with 4.5 frames per second continual shooting?
