The Canon T-90 System |
|
Modern
Classic SLRs Series : |
The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Like many contributors to this bulletin board, I have found no compelling reason to get rid of my Canon FD kit - a couple of trusty AE1 bodies (one with shutter squeak now) and plenty of lenses. When a friend offered me a T90 a couple of years ago, I jumped at the opportunity. The price was a snip, because it had 'EEE'; the deal being, that if I could get it fixed, it was mine. My local Canon dealer got it fixed for a £95 overhaul by ana independent repairer. So joy was complete - brilliant camera, spot metering and all. It's all I would ever want to own.
However, rather more than a year after having it repaired - well out of the warranty period, I suddenly started getting EEE occasionally. I found that I could clear it by pressing 'battery check', or removing and replacing the batteries completely - the batteries are good; and then firing the shutter at 1/500 or faster a few times. At first this was sporadic, but it happens nearly all the time now, making the camera unusable - too many wasted frames, and who can shoot at 1/500 all the time? It clears easily with no film in, but with film loaded it takes more attempts with the above procedure to clear the fault and be able to work at lower shutter speeds. Before the EEE fault re- appeared, I hadn't used the camera for a couple of months. I've heard that the shutter needs exercising. Is it my failure to do this that has caused the recurrence of the fault? Certainly, with no film in, once I've cleared EEE by battery check and done some rapid fire at 1/500, all the other speeds are operational - this isn't an option with film in, obviously - until I switch the camera off, and then it's as bad as ever. The big question is - is my T90 just scrap, and I should get my AE1s serviced? Or, is it repairable again? But, if I did spend another £100 on it, would it last any longer than 6 months before I had to spend the same amount - I could buy one for £200 or so? Are there any places in UK that specialise in T90s; like the one in Texas, posted here by Steve Wright? I am a bit wary of repairs carried out by independent repairers via high street camera shops (who don't really care about T90s, but would like to sell you the latest EOS) - what exactly do they do for a £100 CLA, and how do I know it will cure the problem long term?4. Jacques, It sounds like your camera has a light leak. Check to see that the back fits snugly when closed with no "give" anywhere. Also check the condition of the light seals. They do deteriorate with age.

Green stripe problem. Some of my pictures show one or more vertical green stripes in the picture and the reverse color on the negative. Peculiar is that on the negative the stripe is about 2 times 3 mm larger than the height of the negative picture. The shop from which I bought the T90 hasn,t got a clue...do you?6. Digital imaging with the T90! I work with digital imaging all the time in my profession, and recently thought about selling my old T90 and switching to the Canon 20D. The cost to buy the new body and lenses would be hard to justify. Someone told me that the effective resolution of 35mm film is equivalent to about 20 megapixels (MP). So I found a local photo shop that would process and scan the negatives as TIFF files at 3k x2k very economically. What I get is a CD-ROM with uncompressed images I can play with using Photoshop. The output is superb, equivalent to a 6MP digital SLR. The film lab will also scan the negatives at a higher resolution (for more $ of course). I realize this isnt truly "digital" but it allows me to take advantage of the superb optics of some of my older FD glass. Try it out in your area...you will not be disappointed!
