The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

I've never tried IR films with the T90, anyway its manual explicity mention shooting IR films therefore the camera should be "somehow" safe. However, IR films are different from common ones, and they should be used as per manifacturer instructions. It's not the film to leave in the camera for a couple of weeks - or undeveloped until one has time to develop it.

Matthew, & Luigi, thankyou both very much!!! I did the search for the carpeted floor, which the idea of quite shocked me at the time!!! But I had tried hitting the base with the palm of my hand whilst pressing the shutter to no avail, except a sore hand.. I got a quote of $130 to get it fixed without postage from walch optics, I thought this was reasonable, though money I just do not have... Well drastic times called for drastic measures, I borrowed a hammer from a friend, yes a hammer, and no I don't own one!! Laid it on it's back, without a lens, and set to hi speed motor drive, then synchronised my pressing the shutter button and hitting the camera with a hammer around the tri-pod insert, gently but firmly, then I heard that wonderful fast repetitive ticking, and was amazed and shocked at the same time to see there was no eee message by the time I could bring myself to release the bottom. Hoorah!

So I have one more question, does anyone know if the t90 is safe to shoot infrared film with? Because I have heard that most mid and lower end eos bodies are not, I have a 1n which is, and I would suspect the t90 to be.. But thought I'd throw it out there..

And anyone who sells any fd glass in Aussie?? I've only go a couple of lenses.. cheers!

Will,

I've personally never had your exact problem, but I have read on this board that bringing the camera down hard on a carpeted floor may sometimes work...if you're brave enough (just search this message board for "carpet", and don't hold me responsible for anything :)
If the problem really is the magnets getting it repaired is probably the only way to ultimately fix it - I've seen photos of what happens to the foam dampers, and once they're gone it's pretty much had it. I've had some work done on a t90 once by The Shutterbox here in melbourne - www.shutterbox.com.au and would recommend them, but the repair will probably cost you over $100 plus postage, etc.
Hope that this was of some help.

Matthew

Mancini: www.canonfd.com has the manuals you're looking for.

Will: if you search for in the past messages there should be a workaround, something alike hitting the camera with your palm while keeping the shutter release button pressed - but I am not sure, check it.

G'day everyone,
Firstly please don't kill me.. I know this is a pretty common problem but I couldn't find anywhere with a solution..
I haven't touched my t90 for about 8 months, and booted it up today only to have the eee/help problem, the mirror is firing, but the shutter plane is stuck - seemingly, from what I can gather it's a build up on some magnets?? I'm at art school and can't afford a massive bill to get it fixed.. But I reckon I would also be too incompetent to open the camera and fix anything that way... - - So to cut a long story short, is there anyway to fix it with out sending it off, nor openening the camera up myself.. A quick and easy fix would be lovely! Ha, well any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for your time.

Will~

Just like to recommend John Lowe for work on T90's. I have just had one of my T90 serviced and shutters cleaned by John and the work is excellent. John was very helpful with any questions that I needed answering. This was even though I was in Australia and John is in the UK. I would recommend John without hesitation for any work on a T90.

I recently bough a Canon T90 after doing my homework and waiting for the right auction. I found that T90s can be repaired by several repair people including my local repair guy Ben Arnold who did mine, and at least one guy in the us can supply just about any part and can rebuild the shutters which do have a weakness it really comes down to a weak magnet they don't really break as such they just get dirty and can't over come the extra drag if you will. The best way to avoid problems is to keep the camera dust free lens or body cap always in place and use it on a regular basis. Here is the site of the guy who has just about any canon T90 , accessory, part or repair you could want including shutter: http://www.cameraclinic-usa.com/index.html and as I said my local guy in the midwest can repair them but does not have the stock of parts. I bought a battery holder for mine from Steven @ the Camera clinic otherwise mine just needed a CLA to get it working.
As for Canon not supporting the camera I don't take offense maybe because I bought a Topcon RE Super (same as Super D) and paid as much it as a Nikon F only to have Topcon leave the camera market in 1975 less than 10 years latter; however That RE Super did what I bought for better than the Nikon. I made hundreds of slides with it and I still have that RE Super, it has served me well over the years with only a couple prevenitive maint CLAs and I can still get it CLAed today. My old repair guy ( now deceased after 30 + years of camera repair ) told me cameras don't wear out, bad desings may have things that break but there is no real wear inside cameras.
Hope this helps
Jay

Jan,

Just a suggestion that might work.

Push in the depth of field button and then push it to let it out.
Now try the shutter.
