The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for this great SLR cameras by Canon. Please don't mail me other than constructive suggestions or rectifying mistakes found in this site, thanking you in advance. Although I am not seeking to part with my A1 and its motor drive, I am impressed with the specification of the T90, and may buy one if I can find one at the right price. Does anyone have an opinion on the T90 versus the AI ? Does the T90 have any weaknesses?

Tim, there are actually lots of reliable places to send the T90. Here's just a few: Strauss Photo Technical, Washington DC. (202)528-3200. Or on the West Coast, there is Horizon Electronics, Union City CA (800)233-6169. And you will find others even, like Authoruzed Tech Repair, Alhambra, CA. (888)966-8896. These three are even on the list Canon hands out to customers when they misguidedly crawl into Canon USA with the Tank Then, there are those that swear by the place in MorganTown, West VA. And Japan Camera of Norcross, Georgia. And a guy in Las Vegas. And anyway, what part of Slovenia do you live in, you didn't say. (joost kidding). Now Irwin has a question for the forum: Do you think a T90 which operates OK needs a CLA routinely BEFORE it craps out? One lady-at Canon USA- says the internal battery can last forever if the AA cells are always kept fresh. Meaning, is there any preventive maintenance worth doing. Anybody have a clue? Like are there gears to lube, dust to blow off the shutter. Things to bring up to spec that are going to go out of whack by themselves. I ask only because a so called CLA goes from $100 up and I am a cheapskate. Meaning I say phooey to Jiffylube's cards asking me to change oil every 3K. Serious question, folks. Does the T90 need routine preventive maintenance involving cracking the case???? Yours truly, Irwin, Last of the Schnorrers

Tim, See message No.214 on page 22.(for now). Oh if only these messages were numbered in chronological order, as received, instead of the reverse as they are now. It would make finding and referring to them much easier and greatly enhance the value of this wonderful site.

To Nigel: Thanks for the input. Now I have to think through why this empirical result works like that based on the design of the 300TL. That's ok,lots of free time here at the Queen... Yours truly, Erasmus B. Black

Hi Erasmus; A while back i did some tests with 300TL and Stofen Diffuser. I found that in A-TTL and FEL, the reduction in output is adjusted for by the flash metering - i.e. no compensation needed, but, in Full Auto mode ie not set modes, you need to adjust ASA setting to compensate - I would tend to set 32ASA for 100ASA film. As Full Auto tends to be used when ambient light isn't contributing much changing ASA setting isn't a problem.

Herr Don. Ja naturally Dr S has got your answer: Photoflex LiteDisc, white and silver, size "32". WYSIWYG reflector. Costs under 35 US currency and useful for all kinds of stuff. Put the shiny side under your face when you get the suntan by the pool. And more, collapsible reflector makes you look not so much like the tourist mein friend. (Fill is fill and Herr Spielberg would maybe agree with Dr S).At Costa Del Sol you are going to be napping when the sun is up high, nicht? Lone shooter and need someone to hold the reflector?, Maybe I come too... Bon voyage. Dr S.,c/o Lastopfurgas, MT ------------------------------------------------------------------------

HELP....I am getting ready to leave for Europe in a month and need a fill flash solution for my T90. The lighting on the Costa del Sol can be harsh, and I need a cost effective solution. I don't really want to shell out $150 for a 300tl just for fill, but am struggling making manual or eos-compatible flashes work. Any success??? Hi Thomas, Erasmus. I have conducted some tests with a flash meter and found that the exposure compensation does in fact change the film speed. So increasing the film speed and dialling in compensation does not reduce the flash output. However I'm reliable informed that the 300TL reduce it's output by -1.5 stops above EV13 (gradual decrease in power from EV10). This could explain why the results initially looked good. There is only one sure method of reducing the fill in output (other than purely manual). That is to meter the scene and set the daylight exposure manually (300TL must be switched off) - then increase the film speed by the amount of reduction required, switch on the 300TL (in TTL of FEL mode) and take the shot. ALWAYS remembering to reset the film speed once finished. You could use the exposure compensation in the same manner. One further method that I believe works is to use a 'Soffen' diffuser, set the camera to autoexposure and the flash to TTL or FEL. The preflash (infrared) monitors the exposure requirement, but the actual exposure has a diffuser in the way which reduces the output seen by the subject by a stop or so. This will only work if the flash is set in the standard position. If used at a bounced angle the preflash comes from the main flash head and hence negates the effect of the diffuser. Hope this helps.
